Background
The Clinical Trials Portal (Portal) is a
secure online system developed to
provide NSW trial units with a
simple and automated tool to
capture, monitor and report on their
cancer clinical trial activity.
The Portal was designed and
developed by the Cancer Institute
NSW (CINSW) in collaboration with
stakeholders to meet external user
needs and Clinical Trial Program
business requirements.
It was initially targeted at units in
receipt of CINSW funding and is
now being expanded to include all
NSW trial units.
Aim
Improve trial activity data capture
and monitoring in NSW
The Portal provides units with a user
friendly tool to track and monitor
their own trial metrics and
performance.
Improve capability to efficiently
report against a set of Key
Performance Indicators
Capturing a NSW trial activity data
set in one central online system.
This enables the CINSW to report
trial activity and performance against
key clinical trial indicators at both a
State-wide and Local Health District
(LHD) level.
Increase trial awareness and trial
participation
The Portal houses a master list of
cancer trials conducted across NSW.
This allows trial staff, clinicians and
other cancer professionals to access
a searchable list of trials open to
recruitment, to identify potential
trials and participating units for
patient referrals.
Method
External users were involved in both
the development and testing prior to
system implementation. The Portal
was made available to users in
January 2013.
All trial information and activity data
are self reported by users and data
quality maintained by stringent
internal data management
processes.

Results
Functional and efficient trial
activity data capture, monitoring
and report tool supporting local
strategic decision making in cancer
clinical trials. Clinical trial units and
LHDs may utilise the trial activity
data to undertake periodic review of
trial performance:
• by assessing trial milestone dates
• by monitoring recruitment to
target
Improved capability to efficiently
report against a set of clinical trial
key performance indicators as part
of the CINSW Reporting for Better
Cancer Outcomes Program and
other reporting requirements.
A searchable list of cancer clinical
trials conducted in NSW with
recruitment status and site contact
details updated by participating units:
• by sponsors (industry and non-
industry)
• by participating discipline based
clinical trial units
• by trial recruitment status
• by tumour group
Implications
Building a more comprehensive and
accessible state-wide clinical trial
data set and improving reporting
capabilities against performance
indicators, can act as a catalyst to
improved clinical trial operating
models in NSW :
• Improved strategic decision
making within LHDs / Institutions
• Support stakeholders in
identification of gaps and
opportunities in trials
• Inform performance
improvements
The Portal has not yet been fully
