3. Coaching Log – Athlete Observation
Strengths Reaction time – From observing the athlete I was able to view his strengths when training and fighting with other
athletes, reaction time was one of the main areas Ryan is excelling in, he is currently at performance level with
reaction time and is developing it so that has able to advance as an MMA fighter.
Motivation levels – From observing Ryan's training I was able to see how focused, willing dedicated he was to
push himself until failure. Ryan also stays to work on his fighting skills and fitness level long after training has
ended, this shows Ryan has very high motivation levels in MMA.
Improvement Areas Flexibility – From observing Ryan I was able to see that his flexibility was restricting him when training and
sparing against other fighters. Ryan is a solid performance level fighter however it felt as if Ryan’s poor flexibility
is stopping him from developing his other attributes to their full potential without flexibility restrictions.
Power –was also a concern from observational research done on Ryan. When he was training against other
fighters or punching bags I was able to see that Ryan's power exerted into his punches wasn’t enough and wasn’t
phasing the opponent to the level it should have, his accuracy was allowing him to make effective well placed
punches, however their wasn’t enough force in them to stop the opposition advancing.
Points for future
discussion
Reviewing weak discrepancies –From observing the main discrepancy's that Ryan is weakest at I believe a very
important discussion for the future would be to test and review the discrepancy's to see if any improvement has
been made for each of them.
Promoting opportunities –is also a very important topic for discussion, from teaching and observing Ryan its
important that the coach is able to bring opportunity's to Ryan's attention when he finds them, this is ideal as
promoting opportunity's that Ryan can take part in will help him to develop as a fighter, enough challenging
opportunity's will push Ryan to higher performance levels.
Possible actions arising New training drills –From observing Ryan and finding areas that need improvement, I feel that new training drills
focusing more on training these weakness should be a priority for the coach to include into the normal training
routine for Ryan's benefit.
Alter training routine – Sometimes it’s not a good idea to add in new training drills and routines, in this case
simply changing factors such as intensity, time and people used in a drill can have a significant effect on Ryan's
development as a fighter simply by altering pre existing training drills slightly.

4. Coaching Log – Athlete Profiling Meeting
Date 5/1/15
Location My home
Discussion points Strengths and weakness’s – when me and Ryan met up we talked about his personal progress as a performance level
fighter, we talked mainly about his strengths and weaknesses in detail. This was done with the help of the performance
wheel being used as a reliable set of data, this task was made a lot easier by using the performance wheel as it showed
us the main focus points for discussion.
Targets for future – One of the main discussion points in this meeting was setting Ryan personal targets for the future,
when talking we agreed that they had to be realistic and time based around Ryan's other life responsibility's such as
family time and college hours. Making these targets realistic and fitted around Ryan's life gives them more of a chance
of working successfully as they wont interfere with Ryan's other responsibility's.
Concerns Strength – From talking to Ryan I was able to see what he thought was the main areas restricting him against other
fighters. Ryan said that one of the areas he felt he needs to make improvement in is strength, I also agreed with Ryan
after we discussed why he felt like this for a short period of time.
Dodging – When me and Ryan reached the ,‘concerns’ section of the athlete profiling meeting Ryan decided to bring up
dodging as one of his personal concerns that he feels will need improvement for him to progress as an MMA fighter.
Points for future
discussion
Reviewing weak discrepancies –From meeting with Ryan we were able to discuss his main discrepancy's that he is not
performing at the ideal standard for his current performance level, I believe this was a very important topic for
discussion as later into the future testing would be ideal to review his chosen discrepancy's to see how much
improvement, if any, has been made for each of them.
Reviewing current performance level – a point for future discussion is the reviewing of Ryan’s performance level, we
will look at how he perceived his current performance level himself, then look into how far he is from reaching the next
higher performance level, after this I will give my opinion so that we are able to look into ways of achieving this by
discussing options; for example, training plans or high level competitions.
Possible actions
arising
New training drills –When meeting Ryan we sat down and had a discussion, this was to help find areas that need
improvement, I feel that doing this helped us to get an good indication of new training drills that should be added into
his normal training routine, the drills that may be added into his routine will be based on his main training discrepancy's
we decided from discussion and viewing his scores on the performance wheel.
Create a training program- Possible action arising from this meeting with Ryan would be a training plan, created
specifically to develop his main discrepancy’s over an agreed period of time.
5. Coaching Log – Coach Profile Meeting
Date 8/1/15
Location Black belt leaders
Discussion points Athletes performance wheel scores – When me and Ryan's coach met up we were able to discuss Ryan's performance wheel
scores, looking at the triangulated results we were able to see areas where Ryan is performing at his strongest and weakest.
Strengths and weakness’s – when me and Ryan’s coach met up we talked about Ryan's overall progress as a performance level
fighter, looking into his main strengths and weaknesses, we then discussed them all in detail.
This was made a lot easier by using the performance wheel as it gave us both guidance into the main focus points for discussion.
What could be done to see more progress - To see more progress me and Ryan’s coach came up with some ideas to help benefit
Ryan more when training and fighting competitively. Some ideas were adding him into extra training classes each week that focus
on different areas of MMA fighting that Ryan is currently not involved in, we also thought tweaking Ryan's existing training drills to
a higher intensity will also help to push his body to adapt and improve faster.
Concerns Muscular endurance- When meeting with Ryan's coach we decided that from agreed opinions and the help of are scoring system
set up on the performance wheel, helped us to find muscular endurance as a concern for Ryan that will need improvement upon.
Speed- When meeting with Ryan's coach we decided from the wheel scores and shared discussion about Ryan's main areas for
concern that his speed is defiantly a weak aspect of his overall progress as an MMA fighter.
Points for future
discussion
Reviewing current performance level – When I met up with Ryan’s coach we discussed the reviewing of Ryan's performance level,
we looked into how far Ryan was from reaching the next elite performance level. We then look at all the possible factors that are
holding him back from achieving this shift in performance level.
Training strength- Ryan is now in the senior league, this means that Ryan who is 18 years old will be now fighting full grown adults
in competitive matches, this means his strength will need serious improvement to be able to have a realistic chance of winning the
competitive matches against older stronger males. This should be reviewed in the future to make sure improvement has been
made.
Possible actions
arising
New training drills –From meeting with Ryan’s coach we began to research into finding areas that need improvement from Ryan,
we both felt that new training drills focusing more on training Ryan’s main weakness should be a priority to include into the
normal training routine, we also felt that changing smaller components of the training exercise’s such as time of drills and
intensity can also be used to make significant changes in the normal training routine.
Targets for the future- From this meeting me and Ryan's coach will be setting Ryan targets for the future, we will make sure they
are realistic targets that can be reached with enough work, this is so that the targets can then be reviewed with a good chance of
seeing improvement.
Create a training program- Possible action arising from this meeting with Ryan’s coach would be to create a training plan
specifically created to develop Ryan's weakest discrepancy’s over an agreed period of time.
