1. Rebecca West interprets Journalism as “the ability to meet the challenge of filling the space.” As an
aspiring journalist I will treat my personal statement the same way in order to “fill the space”
successfully to highlight my potential within this field.
English has been a passion of mine that I have been able to explore in detail at A level. Combining
this with Media and Photography guarantees I have a wide range of opportunities within the Media
industryensuring these A levels will be beneficial to my aspiring career.
My interest in the creative world of Media has developed over several years; I undertook a Creative
and Media Diploma and achieved a grade A. This demanded hard work, dedication and motivation as
I was studying for GCSE’s at the same time. This reinforces my passion to succeed and my ability to
use my time effectively in order to maximise my chances of success throughout my endeavours.
Within my diploma we had to make a children’s book worthy of publication: allowing my love of
writing to control my ideas and final piece. This task was immensely rewarding as I produced
something successful and worthwhile. It was while creating, perfecting and completing this book
that I discovered the thrill of producing something others would enjoy; thisreflects my passion for
writing.
At AS level I studied Sociology and successfully achieved a grade A. This achievement is an example
of my ability to report on events using facts, quotes and personal opinion. This new skill will allow
me to report on a topic, while creating a strong sense of personality, without losing the main focus
and more importantly the facts.
As a Media and Photography student I create videos, blogs and photographs which highlightmy
desire to be involved in the many forms of media. This indicates how my degree would fit into my
personal hobbies and career ideas as it reflects what I enjoy and love.
I enjoy a wide range of reading and have a strong passion for theatre which was reflected in my
English coursework as I chose the work of Tennessee Williams due to his unique views on life and his
method of expressionism. One of my main interests includes music as the connection a person can
feel depends on the lyrics. This highlights how the message within something is the main reason for
its existence: much like journalism.
I have been a loyal victim to the ever changing fashion world long before The Devil Wears Prada
become popular. I believe the three main successes within a person are the brains they have in their
head, the grit and determination they hold in their gut and, finally, the shoes they wear on their feet.
As a journalist there is a wide area to explore in depth and report on excessively asan interest in the
subject will enable me to write sufficiently and engagingly. The personal aspect to a story is what
differentiates it from the rest and helps to generate the desired emotion. With a career as highly
competitive as Journalism it is my vivid imagination and array of emotions that allow me to report
on a topic with the flair and independence necessary in order to be successful. Therefore it would be
immensely rewarding for me to immerse myself within the study of my passion.
