Teaching skills in "layers", adding complexity a little at a time Teaching kids how to lose "Teachable moments": stop the game, stop the practice and instruct Reaching out to parents for help Parent drills for home: wiffle ball pitching and hitting play catch Toss grounders, flies 10 or 15 minutes after dinner increases touches and swings and really helps!
Let your team â and their parents â know which methods you will be using to communicate schedule changes and updates during the season Whichever methods you choose, stick with them. Strive to keep your players â and their parents â informed all season long. You may need to be flexible (i.e. some do not have email) Players: expectations, goals Parents: EVERYTHING Other teams in your division: thru director usually Coaches: your team coaches and also managers from other teams (usually thru director) Directors: practice and games schedules, division specific rules, questions Sponsor: new this year, still working this out. Consider adding to your mailing list.
NO GRUMPY COACHES!! Get some help. Team parents. I have a list but you should reach out yourself. Things they can do: handle your phone calls or text messages to team, emails, distribute uniforms, bring team water in summer, etc, etc

Practice correctly. This can be a challenge if youâre understaffed.
Meet with coaches, communicate, be on the same page, one has to know what youâre doing, donât be SHY!
Think outside the box! Don't get stuck in the same old drill routine! TRY THINGS! Actually DO the things you are trying to teach so you know what you're saying PRACTICE with your own kids, try drills, techniques for teaching, see what works and what doesn't Rely on other coaches, work together, learn from each other
Different than last year, no pairings. Find a team and hook up! Up to you guys what you do with this! Suggestions: Bring younger players (and their coaches) up to your practices Help out with a practice Joint practices Attend a game together as a team, this works as a drill Have older players help out at Instructional games (ump, coach, etc) Assist with scrimmages Wiffle ball games Sky is the limit! Try to at least do 1 thing together.
â Age appropriateâ
Discussion of âage appropriateâ and what we really mean by that Put players where they have the best chance to succeed!
Ratings based on 20 minute evaluation in the gym in mid-winter Many kids not successful, not ready for move Results in: Reduced playing time Developing pitchers and/or catchers lose a year, may not see much action Results a bad experience for the child, not an environment they can be successful in Some left and did not return
1000 coaches total in 4 sessions Jan 25-27 at Petco Park.
