3. Introduction of John wood
• John wood is the founder of room to read (a
global non-profit organisation focus on literacy
and gender equality in education)
4. What did John Wood Do?
• He took a vacation from his work in microsoft in
1998 to trek through the himalayas. While
trekking,he met a resource director for the
schools in nepal. He then visited a school which
had 450 students and only a handful of books.
• A year later, he returned with 3000 books all
donated with response to his email appeal to
friends and family. Soon he left his job at
microsoft to devote himself full time to books for
Nepal. A side project that would eventually form
room to read.
5. Room to Read
• It officially was founded in 2001. operating in
10 countries throughout asia and africa the
organisation focuses on increasing literacy and
gender equality in education in developing
countries. Its programmes develop literacy
skills and habits of reading among children
and support girls to complete schools with
relevant life skills to succeed in life.
