Interactive Media Applications
Short films
• A short film is longer than a trailer or advert. It is a film
cut down into a shorter version showing as much as
possible in the time it lasts. Showing the full story
quicker than it would in a full film instead of dragging it
out.
• There are numerous file formats for video such as mp4,
mov, mpg, avi, swf, rm, 3gp, wmv, flv.
• Short films relate to interactive media as they are
platformed in presentations and the world wide web
etc and can be seen and shared from youtube on social
media sites for further interaction.
Short films
• Here’s an example of a short film:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_kIyihNd-A
• It last 7 minutes 43 seconds, the main character is
a boy who talks to a girl he likes by leaving
comments on a desk she sits in too. The boy
doesn’t talk at any point, he just shows his
emotions and there is background music (a
piano) playing throughout which adds extra affect
to the story.
Promotional video
• A promotional video is a short clip promoting a
product for example an artist will have a promo
video for there new album or for there tour
informing the audience of relevant information like
dates and prices etc.
• Platform – email attatchments, world wide web, TV.
• The file formats once again are the same: mp4, mov,
mpg, avi, swf, rm, 3gp, wmv, flv as it’s a video.
Film Trailers
• Film trailers are cut down and edited films, showing
the best bits and highlights, if it’s a comedy showing
funny bits, an action showing the most shocking bits, a
horror showing the scariest bits etc. This is to sell the
film and make it appealing or more appealing to the
audience.
• Example - They are usually shown in the screening of a
different film to promote it, youtube adverts and on
the cinema website for you to watch before deciding
what to watch, or to help you decide, youtube, emails
and TV.
• Platform –Presentations, DVD
Film trailers
• Here’s a link to an example of a film trailer of
Spider-Man 2:

User Generated Content (Web 2.0)
• User generated content also known as UGC refers to a wide variety of
media content that is produced by audiences instead of content that is
made by the BBC, independent production companies or individual
contributors commissioned by BBC.
• It is used for a wide range of applications, including problem processing,
news, gossip and research and reflects the expansion of media production
through new technologies that are accessible and affordable to the
general public.
• Example - UGC has expanded due to developing technologies that are now
available, including digital video and images, mobile text messages,
blogging, message boards, emails and audio submissions.
• Platforms – Mobile (iPhone and android) devices, world wide web.
Viral Marketing
• Viral marketing is a video that gets shared and goes
global or becomes very popular. This happens by
putting it up online on all the social media sites and
sharing it with everyone and asking everyone to keep
sharing it. This is if you made the video purposely as
part of viral marketing.
• But for example sometimes a video of something
that wasn’t planned is put up on the web and on
youtube and goes viral, more people see it and talk
about it and it goes viral without meaning to.
• Platform – World wide web, email attachments,
Presentations, mobile devices.
Advertising
• Advertising is a short video on TV it’s purpose is
purely to advertise and promote something and
always gets a point across to the target audience.
• For example an advert for a new phone.
• Platform – World wide web, mobile devices, email
attachments.
Virtual Reality Tours
• Virtually reality tours are pre recorded videos
showing its target audience/potential customers
around a place/location giving them a tour of
what it looks like.
• For example you can have a virtual tour around
the BBC radio1 building, if your interested in
looking or going on a real tour. Or google maps
you can have a virtual tour around streets.
• Platform – world wide web, email attachments,
mobile devices, presenetations.
Games
• Video games are fictional games played on a
game console, it isn't video footage shot in
real life, its animation video.
• Example - video games for consoles like PS3,
Xbox 360 etc.
• Platform – CD, Mobile devices, world wide
web.
E learning
• E-Learning is the term used to describe all forms
of electronically supported teaching and learning.
From using the Virtual Learning Environment .
• Example - E-learning includes numerous types of
media that deliver text, audio, images, animation,
and streaming video, and includes technology
applications and processes such as audio or video
tape, satellite TV, CD-ROM, and computer-based
learning.
• Platform – Online – world wide web, DVD, CD,
mobile devices.
Technology
Digital video capture
• Digital video capture is the process of converting an
analogue video produced by a video camera or DVD
player to digital video.
• Example - MoviePlus makes it easy to capture your
own video and audio footage to your PC from tape
based digital camcorders , analogue video sources.
(e.g. analogue camcorders or TV all via a capture
card) or USB web cams.
• Platform – World wide web, presentations, device,
card, software.
Compression
• (Lossy) compression is a data method that
compresses data by losing some of it. This aims
to minimize the amount of data that needs to be
held, handled, and/or transmitted by a computer.
• (Losless) data compression is data compression
that allows the original data to be perfectly
reconstructed from the compressed data.
• Example - These are used in email attachments as
files may be too big to attach in an email so need
compressed.
• Platforms – DVD, CD, Mobile devices
Lossy advantages
• Lossy compression can be used for nearly any
type of multimedia file, such as audio and
video files as well as images. Lossy
compression can be used for a number of
reasons, such as transferring files over the
internet or for storage purposes, but is
especially used for streaming multimedia files.
Lossy disadvantages
• In lossy compression, the data is lost through
compression on purpose. Every time the file is
re-edited/saved further data is lost. Finally,
lost data stops the file from archiving.
Lossless advantages
• In the lossless compression, data is kept from
being lost in order to maintain the original
content.
• It's lossless so you don't lose any information
and the output is an exact copy of the input.
Lossless disadvantages
• Lossless compression uses more memory than
lossy compression.
• Sending uncompressed lossless files over the
internet is expensive. Even with fast
broadband there is still a limited amount of
bandwidth available. So even though storage
is cheap the cost of sending the files is very
high.
Lossy affect
• The affect lossy files would have on the final
video quality and the applications it is used for
would be poor quality of audio and the visual
video.
Lossless affect
• The affect lossless files would have on the
final video quality and the applications it is
used for would be good quality as it is the
original way and file that was recorded,
nothing has been compressed or lost so the
audio and visual video footage is clear.
Digital video file formats
• Digital video file formats are when videos have been made
and are then saved onto a computer and are saved as a
certain file formats.
• Examples – Digital video file format examples such as: mpg,
mp4, mov, avi, wmv, flv, swf, 3GP and ASF.
• Platforms – DVD, CD, World wide web, mobile devices, email
attachments, presentations.
Example of what Avi is
• Avi is a type of video format, to which a video
is saved as.
• Platforms – DVD, CD, World wide web.
Streaming methods
• Downloading – when you download something from online
or a disc, it can be software, music, photos, a website link,
audio, photos, any sort of file that you want on your laptop
you have to download it to access it.
• Progressive downloading – the transfer of digital media files
from a server to a client.
• Streaming – content sent in compressed form over the
Internet and displayed by the viewer in real time. With
streaming video or streaming media, a Web user does not
have to wait to download a file to play it they can watch it
live.
• Platforms – DVD, CD, Email attachment, world wide web,
mobile device, presentation.
Data transfer rate
• The speed which data can be transmitted from
one device to another. Data rates are often
measured in megabits or megabytes per
second.
• Example – Transferring a video from a mobile
device to a computer device.
• Platforms – World wide web, DVD, CD, Mobile
device, email attachments.
File size
• Resolution - is the term used to describe the number of dots, or pixels used to display an
image.
• Higher resolutions mean that more pixels are used to create the image, resulting in a cleaner
better quality image.
• Data rate - Data rate can refer to:
Bit rate
Data signalling rate
Data rate units
Data transfer rate (disk drive)
• Frame rate - Frame rate is the frequency at which an imaging device produces images called
frames.
• Key frame rate - The frequency with which key frames are placed into temporally compressed
data sequences.
• Compressor - an electrical device which reduces the dynamic range of a sound signal.
• Audio settings – allows you to play around and adjust the volume, pitch etc of sound.
• Platforms – World wide web, presentations, mobile devices, DVD, CD, email attachents.
Aspect ratio (4.3, 16.9)
Aspect ratio is defined as the ratio of width to height of
an image.
Example – The measurement of an image.
Platforms – World wide web, DVD, mobile device, email
attachments.
Media players
• Flash player
• Quick time
• Windows media player
• RealMedia
• Player
• DivX
• Example -When you click on music you may have downloaded
on your laptop to play it, windows media player will
automatically pop up to play the music as that is what its for.
• Platforms – World wide web, Email attachments,
presentations, CD, DVD.
Digital rights management systems
• Digital rights management is an approach to
copyright protection for digital media.
• Example – A movie in cinemas will have a
digital rights management system.
• Platforms – Cinema, Email attachment, DVD,
CD, Blu-Ray, Mobile device, presentation.

(e.g. analogue camcorders or TV all via a capture card) or USB web cams. • Platform – World wide web, presentations, device, card, software.
  • 15. Compression • (Lossy) compression is a data method that compresses data by losing some of it. This aims to minimize the amount of data that needs to be held, handled, and/or transmitted by a computer. • (Losless) data compression is data compression that allows the original data to be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed data. • Example - These are used in email attachments as files may be too big to attach in an email so need compressed. • Platforms – DVD, CD, Mobile devices
  • 16. Lossy advantages • Lossy compression can be used for nearly any type of multimedia file, such as audio and video files as well as images. Lossy compression can be used for a number of reasons, such as transferring files over the internet or for storage purposes, but is especially used for streaming multimedia files.
  • 17. Lossy disadvantages • In lossy compression, the data is lost through compression on purpose. Every time the file is re-edited/saved further data is lost. Finally, lost data stops the file from archiving.
  • 18. Lossless advantages • In the lossless compression, data is kept from being lost in order to maintain the original content. • It's lossless so you don't lose any information and the output is an exact copy of the input.
  • 19. Lossless disadvantages • Lossless compression uses more memory than lossy compression. • Sending uncompressed lossless files over the internet is expensive. Even with fast broadband there is still a limited amount of bandwidth available. So even though storage is cheap the cost of sending the files is very high.
  • 20. Lossy affect • The affect lossy files would have on the final video quality and the applications it is used for would be poor quality of audio and the visual video.
  • 21. Lossless affect • The affect lossless files would have on the final video quality and the applications it is used for would be good quality as it is the original way and file that was recorded, nothing has been compressed or lost so the audio and visual video footage is clear.
  • 22. Digital video file formats • Digital video file formats are when videos have been made and are then saved onto a computer and are saved as a certain file formats. • Examples – Digital video file format examples such as: mpg, mp4, mov, avi, wmv, flv, swf, 3GP and ASF. • Platforms – DVD, CD, World wide web, mobile devices, email attachments, presentations.
  • 23. Example of what Avi is • Avi is a type of video format, to which a video is saved as. • Platforms – DVD, CD, World wide web.
  • 24. Streaming methods • Downloading – when you download something from online or a disc, it can be software, music, photos, a website link, audio, photos, any sort of file that you want on your laptop you have to download it to access it. • Progressive downloading – the transfer of digital media files from a server to a client. • Streaming – content sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed by the viewer in real time. With streaming video or streaming media, a Web user does not have to wait to download a file to play it they can watch it live. • Platforms – DVD, CD, Email attachment, world wide web, mobile device, presentation.
  • 25. Data transfer rate • The speed which data can be transmitted from one device to another. Data rates are often measured in megabits or megabytes per second. • Example – Transferring a video from a mobile device to a computer device. • Platforms – World wide web, DVD, CD, Mobile device, email attachments.
  • 26. File size • Resolution - is the term used to describe the number of dots, or pixels used to display an image. • Higher resolutions mean that more pixels are used to create the image, resulting in a cleaner better quality image. • Data rate - Data rate can refer to: Bit rate Data signalling rate Data rate units Data transfer rate (disk drive) • Frame rate - Frame rate is the frequency at which an imaging device produces images called frames. • Key frame rate - The frequency with which key frames are placed into temporally compressed data sequences. • Compressor - an electrical device which reduces the dynamic range of a sound signal. • Audio settings – allows you to play around and adjust the volume, pitch etc of sound. • Platforms – World wide web, presentations, mobile devices, DVD, CD, email attachents.
  • 27. Aspect ratio (4.3, 16.9) Aspect ratio is defined as the ratio of width to height of an image. Example – The measurement of an image. Platforms – World wide web, DVD, mobile device, email attachments.
  • 28. Media players • Flash player • Quick time • Windows media player • RealMedia • Player • DivX • Example -When you click on music you may have downloaded on your laptop to play it, windows media player will automatically pop up to play the music as that is what its for. • Platforms – World wide web, Email attachments, presentations, CD, DVD.
  • 29. Digital rights management systems • Digital rights management is an approach to copyright protection for digital media. • Example – A movie in cinemas will have a digital rights management system. • Platforms – Cinema, Email attachment, DVD, CD, Blu-Ray, Mobile device, presentation.
