The document summarizes research on the #ReSNetSLT Twitter community, which aims to connect speech and language therapists to improve patient care. It finds that over one year the community included 1652 tweets from 254 users, mainly discussing research, training, and the benefits of Twitter for networking and finding sources. A March 2018 discussion reflected the goals of connecting therapists globally. However, the impact on patient care is unknown. Building similar networks requires structuring discussions, being inclusive, and identifying champions to support capacity building.

Some included location information:
• 73 from the UK (several others from Germany, France, Australia,
Netherlands, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Malta)
20. Discussion
1. The tweets of Oct 2016- Oct 2017 included a chat (Nov).
2. The March 2018 chat reflected support for the primary goals of
the Network.
3. The chat format connects a network wider than Europe and UK
4. The impact of #ReSNetSLT on interventions, quality of care, or
involvement of clinicians in research or its translation is not known
21. Conclusions
• #ResNetSLT is a UK/Europe hub that connects a global community of
credible sources.
• The hub requires champions in terms of Twitter chat leadership
(otherwise becomes a media channel for few voices)
• Organisational issues (eg blog post + questions) structure the chat
which can be inclusive of authors beyond timezones (ie after the time
of the chat)
• Further research is needed to identify how participating in
#ResNetSLT facilitates the transfer of clinical knowledge into
research designs; and how research is translated to practice more
rapidly.

22. To build a similar network…
• Use a blog + a Twitter handle, co-ordinated with the
mission/vision/policies in mind
• Structure a series of community discussion points and set a time
to chat about these in public (Twitter), be predictable
• Be open and inclusive of all voices, even if targeting a particular
group (bystander effect)
• Identify champions and nurture these to support others (capacity
building focus)
