The document summarizes the SCUP 2021 Campus Facilities Inventory survey. It provides an overview of the survey objectives, which are to compare campus facilities to national benchmarks and inform master planning. The survey collected data on campus space inventories and recent/planned changes. Key findings include that student enrollment growth has outpaced facilities growth, private schools provide more space per student, and institutions plan to invest in instructional spaces and technology infrastructure. A panel discussion addressed using peer data and institutional data for planning, as well as integrating pandemic lessons into future plans.
3. Objectives:
To introduce the 2021 Campus
Facilities Inventory (CFI) survey and
to learn from survey participants
as to how they use peer
benchmarking and institutional
data to inform guidelines and
standards in campus planning.

Session Agenda
Agenda:
4. 1. Compare your campus to several national
benchmarks.

Importance of Benchmarking Information
Understanding what peers are doing and the current state of the higher
education facilities.
Survey Goals
● The goal of the survey is to provide a sense
of size and scale of college and university
facilities, along with a snapshot of what
institutions are prioritizing in terms of
planned changes to campus facilities.
● The survey will be administered next year
and beyond to provide institutions with
longitudinal data on how they compare to
peers.
Value of Benchmarking
● Understand the current landscape of higher
education facilities
● Understand how you compare to other
institutions
● Provide context to inform your decision
making
● Information to help you make the case for
change
8. SCUP Annual Conference | SCUP 2021 Campus Facilities Inventory
2007 Campus Facilities Inventory
The last time this information was collected was 14 years ago. Much has
changed since then.
Information Collected
● Institutional Identification to cross reference
data with IPEDS database
● Respondent Information
● NASF by FICM Space Type
○ Education & General NASF (E&G) - space
used for teaching research, or the
preservation of knowledge
○ Auxiliary NASF - income generating space
such as residential and athletic facilities
Key Insights
● 284 institutions included in the survey
analysis.
● Mean NASF per student was 224.1 across all
space types.
● The distribution pattern of mean NASF per
student across space types remained
relatively unchanged from past surveys.
● Both private and public 4-year institutions
reported decreases in Office NASF per in-
person student.
9. 2021 Campus Facilities Inventory
Going beyond inventory data and asking about recent and planned changes
to campus facilities.
Information Collected
● Institutional Identification to cross reference
data with IPEDS database
○ In-person students
○ Sector
○ Camus setting
● Respondent Information
● NASF by FICM Space Type
○ Greater detail in space types (e.g. office and
conference spaces as opposed to just office
category in 2007)
● Information on recent and planned changes
to campus facilities
● Effects of COVID-19 on Planning

2021 CFI Survey and Data Collection
88 institutions participated from 30 states.
Survey Methodology
● Survey period was January 11 to April 17,
2021
● 88 institutions participated, 83 provided
NASF data
● The 2022 survey will build on lessons
learned from the 2021 survey, aim to
include more participants, and, like the 2007
survey include data from 2021 participants
to create a robust dataset.

How We Cut the Data
Responses were analyzed by institutional size, sector, and campus setting.
IPEDS Data
● The analysis calculated number of in-person
students using IPEDS data on the percent of
students engaged only in distance learning
and subtracting them from total enrollment,
since distance learners do not use campus
facilities.
● The survey data was cut by institution size
(in-person enrollment), sector (public,
private, 2-year, 4-year), and campus setting
(urban, suburban, town/rural).

and instructional facility area by campus setting

High Level Findings
Many more details are provided in the report, which will be for sale on the
SCUP website.
Key Findings - Current State
● Growth in student enrollment has outpaced growth
in campus facilities.
● Public schools are typically larger and so have a
larger facility portfolio than private schools.
● Private schools provide more space per in-person
student than public schools.
● There is a robust correlation between in-person
student enrollment and the amount of instructional
space on campus across all campus settings. Less so
for other space types
Key Findings - Future Plan
● Institutions are much more likely to update or
adapt existing facilities as opposed to building
new ones.
● Instructional space is the most likely space type
for investment over the next year.
● Institutions are planning to continue and increase
remote learning and remote work.
● Institutions plan to make major investments in
technology infrastructure, campus computing
infrastructure, and meeting room technology.
