ENG 111 Writing and Inquiry Public Piece Project Background Throughout this course, we have been examining how audiences are persuaded by various styles, rhetorical appeals, and ways of presenting information based on their specific needs and expectations. For this final major component of the semester, you will be taking the argument of your research paper and restructuring in a creative and purposeful way for a new audience. How to Approach the Assignment 1. Audience. Consider your research paper argument. Who would benefit from knowing the information you learned in your research? Choose a new audience for your focus. 2. Purpose. Once you have your audience in mind, what purpose do you have in connecting with them? What information from your research do you want them to know and what would you encourage them to do with it? 3. Genre. Choose a medium for presenting your research argument to your audience. How you choose to restructure your argument is a vital part of this assignment. Make sure the genre you choose has value and purpose for the audience. Possible public pieces include: brochure, public service announcement, commercial, magazine article, newspaper editorial, letter, podcast, original poetry/music, video, poster presentation, etc. Creativity is encouraged as long as it thoughtfully conveys your argument! Note: PowerPoint presentations are not allowed, because they are evil. 4. Create. Compose/create a high quality, professional product. Any scripts, transcripts, or other written components should accompany the actual product. Documents, videos, and images will be uploaded to Blackboard. 5. Presentation. Near the end of the course, you will present your argument to the class, briefly. You will need to discuss what your argument is, the audience you chose, and how your public piece connects effectively with the audience. You may choose to present your actual piece as if the class is your intended audience. Grading Criteria Your public piece will be graded based on how well you do the following: · Demonstrate that the audience is appropriate for the topic/argument · Demonstrate that the medium of the public piece is effective for your audience · Connect your public piece content to your research paper argument · Create a professional, appealing product · Present your ideas in an engaging and articulate manner ENG 111 Writing and Inquiry Rhetorical Analysis Essay For this assignment, you will craft an essay that analyzes and evaluates two news articles that discuss the same topic from two different perspectives. For instance, think of a current issue and find an article that focuses on the pros of this issue and one that focuses on the cons of this issue. Your essay will examine the rhetorical context (author, audience, topic, purpose) as well as the strategies used to convey its message (diction, tone, evidence, imagery, and rhetorical appeals: logos, ethos, and pathos). Since you are comparing two arguments, yo.

Project Outline and Literature Review Overview Entering an academic conversation involves many steps. Two of the most fundamental of these steps involve reading material in the field and forming a perspective on what you have read. Academics demonstrate their perspective on the material in the field by composing a literature review. The purpose of this assignment is to assist you in gathering pertinent research for your final project. Begin by developing an outline that presents categories such as the background, theory, and challenges of the cultural conflict that you identified for your research topic. Then complete a literature review for each category. In brief, a literature review covers multiple areas on the topic including: Key concepts. Existing theories. What is known. What is not well understood. Why it is important to study this topic. What research methods seem most appropriate. A literature review traces the genealogy of a topic in the field; it notes the history of the topic and the notable perspectives of others in the field who have addressed the topic. The purpose of a literature review is to demonstrate that a writer has insightfully and critically surveyed relevant literature in order to convince a targeted audience that this topic is worth addressing. The literature review is not intended to report the literature, but instead to synthesize it. By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assignment criteria: Competency 2: Analyze individual cultural competencies. Competency 3: Analyze culturally and developmentally appropriate intervention strategies. Analyze findings on intervention strategies published by cultural and ethnic researchers. Competency 4: Apply theories, methods, and research in cross-cultural awareness. Interpret scholarly resources for cultural theories and practices relevant to the proposed topic. Examine the research on challenges facing a population. Competency 5: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for members of the human services profession. Communicate in a professional manner using scholarly resources that support the analysis through clear, concise, well organized, and grammatically correct writing that incorporates appropriate APA style and conventions. Assignment Instructions Complete a 3–5 page literature review that cites 8–10 recently published (within the last five years), peer-reviewed resources that inform your research topic. It will be helpful to consider making an outline for your final paper. The literature review should minimally include: Restatement of the cultural conflict identified in your Unit 2 assignment. Discussion of the population or populations. Theories and research that explore the problem. Challenges facing the population or populations. Identification and analysis of personal competencies. While you may find additional resources to use in .

The Bonner Writer’s Workshop is designed for administrators and faculty leaders who are working with the Bonner Community-Engaged Learning Initiative and Racial Justice Initiative. This webinar will support individuals to identify topics in which they would like to research, write, and publish public scholarship. The series will help individuals and teams of writers find focus, develop strategies for writing, and complete chapters and/or articles for publication. The year-long series, which meets monthly, will support participants in their conceptualization and writing process, identifying journals, drafting work, editing, and so on. Individual participants may also find that they gain ideas and approaches to take back to their own institutions, running writers’ workshops for students, faculty, and staff. This series is led by Dr. Ariane Hoy (Vice President), Dr. Rachayita Shah (Community Engagement Scholarship Director), and Dr. David Roncolato (Senior Faculty Fellow and Professor of Community and Justice Studies at Allegheny), representing the Bonner Foundation and involves 20+ people from the national network.

Topic: Reports are used to describe research findings, analyze those findings, and make recommendations. When writing a report, writers need to do more than present the facts. Writers also need to interpret their results and help readers understand the information they have collected. Research reports are designed to describe research methods, analyze findings, and make recommendations. Directions: For this assignment, write a 4-5 page Research Report in which you explore a controversial, still evolving topic related to digital citizenship or using technology/ the internet (see list below). The following SIX sections should be included in your Research Report along with the Works Cited page : Executive summary or abstract : summarizes the major sections of the report. Introduction: defines a research question or problem and explains why it is important to the reader. The introduction clearly states the purpose and main point of the report, and provides background information on the topic. Methods: describes how the research was carried out. Explain your methods step by step in a way that would allow your readers to replicate your research. Each major step will usually receive at least one paragraph of coverage. Explain how you did each step and why you did it that way. Results/Findings: presents the resul ts of the research objectively. Choose at least four of the most important findings/results from your research and describe what you found. Discussion: analyzes the results and explains what they mean. Show how your results answer your research question. Sometimes this section can be merged with the previous section of Results/Findings. Conclusion/Recommendations: restates the main point of the report and offers specific recommendations. Your goal is to leave your readers with a clear sense of what you discovered and what should be done about it. Works Cited/Appendices : Provide bibliographic information for any sources you have cited in MLA format. Include any other m aterials you collected or created such as surveys, questionnaires, perhaps charts, graphs, or other documents that your reader might find useful. A Note on Sources: You should present findings from meaningful sources, not useless or outdated material (l imit yo ur research to essays published in the last 5 years , and bo oks published within the last 10 years ). You must find one book, one article from a journal, and one (reputable website). The other two types of sources are up to you. Useful databases to search include the EBSCOHost , JStor, Academic Search Premier, and the Philosopher’s Index. The books should be useful in finding proper history, facts, quotes, and/or unfamiliar material to the general public. Audience: Your audience is an academic interested in understanding more about what is being sa id and written your topic. You are making yourself the expert on this topic so you should address your audience like you ar.
