2. Background Information
On October 24th 1986 Aubrey Drake Grahame was born, known to the public as Drake.
From Toronto, Ontario, Canada
He is a singer, rapper, record producer, actor and songwriter.
Drake was initially discovered as an actor on a teen drama TV series called Degrassi in
the early 2000s. He departed from the series in 2007, following his dream of becoming a
rapper.
3. Drake as a music artist
In 2010, Drake released his Debut studio album, “Thank me later,” which debuted at
number one in the US.
His next two releases were 2011's Take Care and 2013's Nothing Was the Same, with
certifications of quadruple and triple platinum respectively in the U.S., with the former also
earning him his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
Drake has been signed to OVO Sound, Young Money Cash Money, Republic Aspire,
Universal, Motown, Boy Better Know.
Alongside his Grammy Award win, Drake has won three Juno Awards and six BET Awards.
He has the most number one singles on the Hot Rap Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and
Rhythmic Charts.
4. Drake’s Public Image
Drake is known for creating ‘YOLO’ meaning you only live once.
Drake began referring to his hometown, Toronto as ‘the six,’ in early 2015 and has
subsequently become a popular reference for the city.
The music video for ‘hotline bling,’ of which I included in my mood board due to
being such a popular music video and useful for inspiration, went viral due to
Drake’s unusual dance moves and has subsequently become an internet hit due to
being used in memes and being remixed etc.
Drake is also known for modelling very expensive clothes in his music videos such
as the $1500 moncler coat he is wearing in the hotline bling music video.
5. Genre
The main genre Drake’s songs fall into is Hip Hop/ R&B hence why I have chosen
to study him as he falls into the genre that I am studying and wish to pitch to my
group for our music video.
He has done collaborations with various artists including Future, Lil Wayne, Rick
Ross, and business collaborations including OVO (his record label that he started
up himself) and Canada Goose.
