2. • Interviewing can be a very
stressful part of applying
for a job or a graduate
school. When it comes to
interviewing there are
several different
techniques that can be
used. Today we will discuss
a behavioral interviewing
technique called the STAR
approach. First, let’s define
behavioral interview
3. Behavioral Interview –A job interviewing
technique whereby the applicant is asked to
describe past behavior in order to determine
whether he or she is suitable for a position.
4. The STAR interview approach is a behavioral interview technique.
This technique is simply a way for an interviewee to remember
what they should include in their response during a behavioral
interview.
S/T: Situation or Task
A: Action you took
R: Results achieved
5. Situation or Task – This is where you set the
scene. You tell the interviewer what specific
task, issue, or problem you had to work
through or resolve
Action that You Took – During this time you
explain to the interviewer what steps you took
to work through this problem
Results Achieved – You will tell the interviewer
what the outcome resulted in the actions that
you took
6. Behavioral interview questions often start off
with “Tell me about a time when…”, “Give me
an example of…” or “Describe a time when…”.
7. “Give me an example of how you handle
multiple deadlines.”
S or T: In my current position I handle weekly
analytics for snack cakes, bread, milk and eggs.
The results are due to the Vice President of the
food area every Thursday at 3pm.
Action: I start working through my analytics by
tackling the easiest categories first and saving
the more involved analytics for last. I start the
easiest categories on Friday morning and finish
them up by the end of the day on Friday. I
then take Monday and Tuesday to finish up the
rest of the categories and allow myself all day
Wednesday to double check my work and
allow for any corrections and re calculations.
Results: Prioritizing my work in this way allows
for me to ensure that everything is turned in
by the deadline, accurate, and that I am not
overwhelming myself by trying to do all of the
work the morning that it is due.
8. Tell me about a time when you had a very
difficult goal to reach?
State the Situation or Task, What action did
you take, and what were the Result
9. The STAR method approach helps the
interviewee organize their answers in a way
that allows for a complete thorough answer.
Using these tips and understanding this
approach ensures that you will interview
like a STAR!
