Departure for further activity (often beginning with  kdyĆŸ )  DĂ­val jsem se na televizi  [ipf.] , kdyĆŸ zazvonil telefon. (I was watching TV, when the phone rang.) Interruption to an ongoing activity (expressed by past imperfective) Jestli to udělal, bude mĂ­t hodně peněz. (If he has done it, he will have lots of money.) Completed condition for future or action or state (with  jestli  or  pokud ) Ten dopis jsem uĆŸ napsal.  (I’ve already written the letter.) DomĂĄcĂ­ Ășkol uĆŸ jsem udělal.   (I’ve already done my homework.) Accomplished activity in the past (with  uĆŸ  [ already])
PAST Imperfective Kdo ti ĆĄil ten svetr?  ( Who sowed the sweater for you? ) Kdo ti to ƙíkal? ( Who told you that? ) Emphatic questions about the source/producer (optional)  [ADV] PƙiĆĄel a viděl. (He came and he saw.) Najednou cĂ­til, ĆŸe ho někdo sleduje. (Suddenly, he felt that someone is watching him.) Sudden perception or realization  [ADV] Četl jsi tu knihu?  (Did you read the book?)  DĂ­val jsem se na to dvakrĂĄt.   (I watched it twice.) Recent and/or remembered experience (can be enumerated, often in questions) Včera jsem se dĂ­val na televizi od osmi do desĂ­ti. (Yesterday, I was watching TV from 8 to 10.) Action continuing for a period of time in the past Včera večer Petr vaƙil večeƙi a zpĂ­val si. (Last night Peter was cooking dinner, and singing.) DĂ­val jsem se na televizi, kdyĆŸ zazvonil telefon  [pf] . (I was watching TV, when the phone rang.) Parallel continuous actions in the past (Narrative) (often with  zatĂ­mco  [while]) Ongoing actions in the past interrupted by a perfective action (often with  kdyĆŸ  [when])
PAST Repetitive Petr to uĆŸ dělal.  ( Petr  has done it before.) Do ĆĄkoly jsem chodil. (I’ve attended school.) UĆŸ jsem ƙídil auto. (I’ve driven a car before.) Life experience (with  uĆŸ ) Chodil jsem do ĆĄkoly kaĆŸdĂœ den po tƙi roky. (For three years, I went to school every day.) DomĂĄcĂ­ Ășkoly jsem si dělal kaĆŸdĂœ den.  (I did my homework every day.) UĆŸ tenkrĂĄt si děti pravidelně čistily zuby. (Even then, children brushed their teeth regularly.) Repeated action in the past
PRESENT Imperfective Karel IV. zaklĂĄdĂĄ univerzitu v roce 1348. ( Karel  IV. founds the university in 1348.) Historical narrative  [ADV] Autobus odjĂ­ĆŸdĂ­ zĂ­tra v jednu hodinu odpoledne. (The bus leaves tomorrow at one pm.) Future timetable  Olda prĂĄvě vchĂĄzĂ­ do domu. ( Olda  is entering the building.) NovĂĄk stƙílĂ­ a dĂĄvĂĄ gĂłl. ( NovĂĄk  shoots, and he scores!) Narrative of present action (Commentary)
PRESENT Repetitive AĆ„ si sem nesedĂĄ. (Let him not sit here.) NezpĂ­vej tady. (Don’t sing here.) Tady se chodĂ­ pomalu. (One walks slowly here.) Prohibitions and negative imperatives  [ADV] PtĂĄci odlĂ©tajĂ­ na podzim. (Birds fly away in the fall.) Voda se vaƙí pƙi 100 stupnĂ­ch. (Water boils at 100 degrees.) Statement of (scientific) fact  [ADV] RĂĄd chodĂ­m do divadla, ale nerad hraju fotbal. (I like going to the theater, but I don’t like playing football.) Emphatic plan for enumerated future action  [ADV] On si sem klidně kaĆŸdĂ© rĂĄno pƙijde a sedne si na ĆŸidli.  He will come here every morning without so much as by your leave and sit on the chair.) FUTURE Imperfective KdyĆŸ bude psĂĄt Ășkol, bude mu hrĂĄt hudba. (While he[’ll be] is doing the homework, the music will be playing.)  AĆŸ bude psĂĄt Ășkol, nebude s nikĂœm mluvit. (When he’s writing his homework, he won’t speak to anybody.)  Background of future action with  kdyĆŸ  and  aĆŸ ,  zatĂ­mco ZĂ­tra se budu učit od jednĂ© do dvou. (Tomorrow, I’ll study from one to two.) PƙíơtĂ­ rok budeme celĂ© lĂ©to cestovat. (Next year, we’ll spend the whole summer traveling.) How is it in English Including “going to” future, there are 14 tenses in English.
