The “Lost Cause” = depicts South as a
land of high culture where slaves were
loyal and happy and slavery was a good
Unionist Cause = said seceding states
were responsible for the war and
celebrated the Northern soldiers
Emancipationist = emancipation of
more than 4 million slaves was the
conflict’s most important outcome
Reconciliationist/Reunion = (1) muted
the divisive issue of slavery, (2) avoided
value judgments about the righteousness
of either cause, and (3) celebrated the
valor of Union and Confederate soldiers
