Unit 13 LO5
By Bradley McAuley-Kinchin
Witness Statement - 1
My first witness statement evaluates how I have completed most of tasks that I was
required to do for LO4. This witness statement did pick out that I need to add a slide
on spending power, make the slide on the magazine flat plan clear that it is the same
for both magazines, add more information of how much it costs to market my
magazines. In addition, I need to include social media icons to both of my DPS’s.
Despite this, the What Went Well for my presentation was that I presented in a
professional manner, my Photoshop work shows evidence that I spent a lot of time
working on it and Excellent and detailed Photo-shoot plan.
Witness Statement - 2
My second witness statement evaluates how I have completed most of tasks that I was
required to do for LO4. This witness statement did pick out as a minor correction to
add sort of a drop shadow to the image on the front cover to add depth. Despite this,
the What Went Well for my presentation was that my magazines are professional
looking and I covered my Learning Outcome with confidence and detail.
Corrections To Front Cover
Before: Without Drop Shadow
layer style on the main image.
After: With Drop Shadow
layer style on the main
image.
Drop Shadow: I
implemented a black
drop shadow behind
the main image to
ultimately make the
image stand out to
the reader and
create depth on the
front cover.
Corrections To Double Page Spread
Implemented social media icons in the footer to make the reader aware
that you can find out more information about the magazine and to keep
up to date with news.
Corrections To Double Page Spread
Implemented social media icons in the footer to make the reader aware that you
can find out more information about the magazine and to keep up to date with
news.
Chosen Magazine
Survey Monkey
I will be using survey monkey for my peers to answer questions that I have
conducted to see what further improvements I may need to complete to
make sure that my assessor has not missed anything out. I can use the results
to collate a idea how my peers preferences could impact my own.
Do you think that my Magazine Front Covers were
relevant to the Music Genre that they were aimed at?
The results show that the majority of the audience voted positively to
how effective my front covers are to the chosen genres I aim for in
both. Concluding, this is very good information, especially as it means
when the products are being sold on the newsstands, they can easily
be deduced between other magazines for its genre.
How well do you think I presented my Pitch?
The average number for how well I presented my pitch was around 7.
This highlights that my pitch was above average however not excellent.
Aspects of my pitch which could have possibly contributed to the
rating could be that I used many fillers and didn’t look up as much.
Furthermore, meaning that I am engaging the audience into my
presentation so that they are able to listen to what I am pitching.
What could I do to improve my Pitch?
Adding to what I mentioned in the slide above, I need to engage with the
audience more effectively by looking up and showing good levels of
confidence. This will mean that I the audience will process the information
which I pitch about my two magazines.
What would you change or add to my Front
Cover Designs?
From this question, it is evident that on my front cover there is not
many things I need to change, to make it better. In my opinion, the
main image quality is quite poor because I used my IPhone to take the
image. In addition, I used a flood light to outline the subject as it was
fairly dark at the time. Next time, I will use a higher quality camera,
which will mean I can achieve a better image.
What did you think was the best part of my
chosen Front Cover?
The audience gave feedback to my front cover giving their opinion on
how well it was presented. I found that the majority of people liked
the colours that I used for both magazines and how effective they are
together. In addition, the use of my puff promotion on both magazines
were the same however the colour of it was best suited to the colours
used already.
Were my Proposals detailed and do you think
they covered everything they should have done?
For the question about my proposals, the audience stated that I
do not need to add anything to my proposals as 100% of them
agreed that I had enough information already on it.
Do you agree with my Final Choice magazine? Do you think that
the reasons as to why I chose this magazine are relevant?
100% of the audience voted that my decision is final and is correct.
Moreover, I am able to justify my reasons in my presentation so that
the audience is able to make a quality judgement. However, I did have
a few added results of how my LIMIT background was very clean and
worked really well with the genre I picked.
Yes
Production Plan
Production Plan
Production Plan
This is my 5-week production plan which outlines the day to day checklist which I set
out to be completed for ultimately the magazine being ready by the time of release.
That being the 1st Jan for both. I have decided to give my staff weekends off as part of
the production plan.
Calendar Events
I will be releasing my chosen magazine on January 1st
2017. My decision behind this, is that January being one of
the months where not many media products are being
released means that I am more likely to sell it. Moreover,
by the magazine being released on the 1st day of 2017
allows for me to make an issue that could be classed
exclusive and can be advertised like that so more are able
to be sold nationally.
Subscription Services
For MIC and LIMIT I will be utilizing a subscription service which will
enable me to gain a mass revenue from my sales. It will also mean I
can publish my magazine directly online and print to the customer
instantly. Therefore, are able to reach an increased amount of
readers who buy potentially buy the magazine online rather than
the print version. Furthermore, I can use social medias, specifically
Facebook where users can instantaneously link to the MIC and
LIMIT website where the option for the online and print services
will be located. For the first release of both of the music magazines
I will not be using subscription services as I need to gain further
information on the sales connoting data to how many I can predict
to be receiving for the service.

Risk Assessments
Photography Risk Assessment:
Before I take the photos of the subject who I have chosen to be on my front covers
for MIC and LIMIT, I need to make sure I have the permission to do so. This to be
published online and printed. One way I did this is by using a consent form which is
written with the Data Protection Act 1998. Using this consent form, gave me
written permission by the subject with evidence to the legal conditions of use to
make sure that their information is safe.
Area Risk Assessment:
Before I take the photos of the subject who I have chosen to be on my front covers
for MIC and LIMIT, I need to make sure I have the area is safe to do so. Risk
assessment of the area needs to guarantee safety of both of us, whether that
includes weather conditions or other visible hazards.
Software Risk Assessment – Resizing an image:
When editing the images I need to make sure that I have resized the image
corresponding to the original photo taken. One way I can do this, when using the
free transform tool I need to press shift whilst using the mouse so that the image
remains in same frame. Therefore, making the front cover look neat and
professional to the audience.

Royalties
NLA Media Access is a media centered company that focuses on directly
reducing time and expense for publishers creation. Moreover, acting
collectively on behalf of publishers, NLA licences give you the permission
without the need to seek approval from individual publishers. This establishes
for my magazines and other magazines that are sold with licensing to NLA
Media Access will receive the royalties if someone else wanted to include the
information.
NLA Media use their own ‘Code of Practice’ in which people that are wanting
to know further about NLA and how they operate. Including essential
information that can answer any question that a customer may have about
their licencing policy and what would be the consequences if licenses are not
valued/ complied with. That by using the NLA Media Access licence the
customer is responsible for keeping the license up to date so it is eligible to be
used in other forms of media.

Issues (Regulatory & Legal, Ethical)
Watermarking an image, is another form of copyrighting. This allows creators protect their creation so that others are unable to falsely
claim their rights to the creation of the image. IP – Intellectual Property Rights allows owners and their trademarks to be profited from
their own work and time. Watermarks need to be of specific nature on the image so it is unable to be changed by compression and other
changes to the image. Watermarking an image is all about making a clear message to the individual that it should not be copied or used
without consent from the creator.
For any creator, without copyrighting their work, may hinder their chances or being able to reproduce content that they enjoy doing.
Each media platform has their own form of copyright laws and regulation, however for some sufficient creators are unable to stand out
above the rest. Using watermarking on their content guarantees safety but also potentially grants accreditation from individuals. There is
no actual number on the pricing of the removal of the watermark from an image and mainly relies on the creators choice. For the
watermark to be removed in the image below, the creator has not put a price on it and can find the original image on his blog page. One
most common way to pay to remove a watermark from the image would find creative commons licensing on the publishers page where
you pay a set or optional fee to use the image the creator has published.
The Data Protection Act controls how your personal information is used by organizations, businesses or the government. Everyone
responsible for using data has to follow strict rules called ‘data protection principles’. They must make sure the information is: used fairly
and lawfully, accurate, kept safe and secure. This ensures that information within the business is maintained and compromised by
others. Everyone in the business has to comply to these rules otherwise they could receive costly fines.
Ethical Issues: When a magazine or any media product is being produced, the publisher will have to look at the consequences after its
release. Whether or not they have targeted certain religions or cultures that are deemed to be vulnerable. This could be of ethnic
groups, age, gender and sexual orientation then forth. If magazines do not take potential offences to the consumers it could possibly
impact the brands reputation.

Role of Relevant Regulatory Bodies
The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) who are an independent
regulator who set out rules and regulations that Media companies have to oblige to.
They hold specifically newspapers and magazines to ‘account for their actions and
protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain
freedom of expression for the press’. Specifically using the set out Editors code
which is a copy of 16 rules that need to be followed in order for the magazine to be
able to be released publically. If an Media company have not followed the allocated
rules which are vastly accredited by others, will possibly result in prosecutions under
Public acts and laws. The rules that IPSO set out are guidelines that my magazines
would need to oblige to. If I do not, then my magazine is unable to be published to
the public.
Examples of topics in the Editors Code of Practice:
• Accuracy
• Privacy
• Discrimination
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) are another independent regulator
specifically targeting Advertising across all media. Their purpose is to make sure that
advertising in the media industry are not false but instead ‘good’ for the audiences.
In Addition, As well as acting on complaints, carry out many other regulatory
activities to make sure advertising stays within the rules. For example, the ASA
actively checks ads in all media and regularly conducts surveys of advertisements to
make sure advertising is appropriate.
https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/ https://www.asa.org.uk/About-ASA.aspx
Accuracy (Editors Code of Practice)
When I am producing the MIC magazine, I have to adhere to the IPSO
Editors Code of Practice. If they don’t then the magazine is unable to be
publically released. One topic being accuracy. This meaning that
information in the magazine cannot be made up or misleading. For
example, including an article on a medical treatment that is said to treat
and cure a disease.
The Sun being one of the main perpetrators for misleading headlines on
front covers of their magazines. “Queen backs brexit” when there has been
no official confirmation of this. “1 in 5 Muslims’ sympathy for jihadis” but
there is no statistic to conclude this statement.
Accuracy being 1 of 16 codes of practice that IPSO set out to protect
audiences/readers and ultimately the magazine publishers. For the MIC
Magazine I am more prone to misleading people in advertising about
albums that are said to be releasing and reviews based upon it. If the
reviews are very different to what the population believe the quality of the
album is, then can be pointed at that as I would be therefore falsely
advertising the album. And even if this is false, readers are able to
complain.

Copyright
The copyright law 1988 has been set up to
protect creators of any creative works. Material
not protected by copyright is available for use by
anyone without the author's consent. A
copyright holder can prevent others from
copying, performing or otherwise using the
work without his or her permissions and people
eligible to comply for illegal prosecutions if
caught.
The 1998 Law have now meant now any original
content that is created but the creator is
deemed to be copyrighted if someone else was
to use it without consent. This benefitting music
artists and media companies as then other
people are not able to plagiarize and claim
righteous money from them.

Conclusion
From LO5, I covered many things which are based on the feedback that I was
given from my Unit 13 LO4 Presentation on MIC and LIMIT. Moreover, I have
also gathered additional feedback from the survey monkey survey that I put
together prior to my presentation so that the audience is able to fill it out
throughout it. This information is vital as I am able to collate both sources of
data and analyse them thoroughly displayed in pie charts to conclude ideas
based on my original ones.
For both magazines, I also looked at IPSO and other issues which possibly may
hinder the publication of them and took into consideration if my magazines
meet the requirements set.

Unit 13 LO5 Powerpoint

  • 1. Unit 13 LO5 By Bradley McAuley-Kinchin
  • 2. Witness Statement - 1 My first witness statement evaluates how I have completed most of tasks that I was required to do for LO4. This witness statement did pick out that I need to add a slide on spending power, make the slide on the magazine flat plan clear that it is the same for both magazines, add more information of how much it costs to market my magazines. In addition, I need to include social media icons to both of my DPS’s. Despite this, the What Went Well for my presentation was that I presented in a professional manner, my Photoshop work shows evidence that I spent a lot of time working on it and Excellent and detailed Photo-shoot plan.
  • 3. Witness Statement - 2 My second witness statement evaluates how I have completed most of tasks that I was required to do for LO4. This witness statement did pick out as a minor correction to add sort of a drop shadow to the image on the front cover to add depth. Despite this, the What Went Well for my presentation was that my magazines are professional looking and I covered my Learning Outcome with confidence and detail.
  • 4. Corrections To Front Cover Before: Without Drop Shadow layer style on the main image. After: With Drop Shadow layer style on the main image. Drop Shadow: I implemented a black drop shadow behind the main image to ultimately make the image stand out to the reader and create depth on the front cover.
  • 5. Corrections To Double Page Spread Implemented social media icons in the footer to make the reader aware that you can find out more information about the magazine and to keep up to date with news.
  • 6. Corrections To Double Page Spread Implemented social media icons in the footer to make the reader aware that you can find out more information about the magazine and to keep up to date with news.
  • 8. Survey Monkey I will be using survey monkey for my peers to answer questions that I have conducted to see what further improvements I may need to complete to make sure that my assessor has not missed anything out. I can use the results to collate a idea how my peers preferences could impact my own.
  • 9. Do you think that my Magazine Front Covers were relevant to the Music Genre that they were aimed at? The results show that the majority of the audience voted positively to how effective my front covers are to the chosen genres I aim for in both. Concluding, this is very good information, especially as it means when the products are being sold on the newsstands, they can easily be deduced between other magazines for its genre.
  • 10. How well do you think I presented my Pitch? The average number for how well I presented my pitch was around 7. This highlights that my pitch was above average however not excellent. Aspects of my pitch which could have possibly contributed to the rating could be that I used many fillers and didn’t look up as much. Furthermore, meaning that I am engaging the audience into my presentation so that they are able to listen to what I am pitching.
  • 11. What could I do to improve my Pitch? Adding to what I mentioned in the slide above, I need to engage with the audience more effectively by looking up and showing good levels of confidence. This will mean that I the audience will process the information which I pitch about my two magazines.
  • 12. What would you change or add to my Front Cover Designs? From this question, it is evident that on my front cover there is not many things I need to change, to make it better. In my opinion, the main image quality is quite poor because I used my IPhone to take the image. In addition, I used a flood light to outline the subject as it was fairly dark at the time. Next time, I will use a higher quality camera, which will mean I can achieve a better image.
  • 13. What did you think was the best part of my chosen Front Cover? The audience gave feedback to my front cover giving their opinion on how well it was presented. I found that the majority of people liked the colours that I used for both magazines and how effective they are together. In addition, the use of my puff promotion on both magazines were the same however the colour of it was best suited to the colours used already.
  • 14. Were my Proposals detailed and do you think they covered everything they should have done? For the question about my proposals, the audience stated that I do not need to add anything to my proposals as 100% of them agreed that I had enough information already on it.
  • 15. Do you agree with my Final Choice magazine? Do you think that the reasons as to why I chose this magazine are relevant? 100% of the audience voted that my decision is final and is correct. Moreover, I am able to justify my reasons in my presentation so that the audience is able to make a quality judgement. However, I did have a few added results of how my LIMIT background was very clean and worked really well with the genre I picked. Yes
  • 18. Production Plan This is my 5-week production plan which outlines the day to day checklist which I set out to be completed for ultimately the magazine being ready by the time of release. That being the 1st Jan for both. I have decided to give my staff weekends off as part of the production plan.
  • 19. Calendar Events I will be releasing my chosen magazine on January 1st 2017. My decision behind this, is that January being one of the months where not many media products are being released means that I am more likely to sell it. Moreover, by the magazine being released on the 1st day of 2017 allows for me to make an issue that could be classed exclusive and can be advertised like that so more are able to be sold nationally.
  • 20. Subscription Services For MIC and LIMIT I will be utilizing a subscription service which will enable me to gain a mass revenue from my sales. It will also mean I can publish my magazine directly online and print to the customer instantly. Therefore, are able to reach an increased amount of readers who buy potentially buy the magazine online rather than the print version. Furthermore, I can use social medias, specifically Facebook where users can instantaneously link to the MIC and LIMIT website where the option for the online and print services will be located. For the first release of both of the music magazines I will not be using subscription services as I need to gain further information on the sales connoting data to how many I can predict to be receiving for the service.

  • 23. Risk Assessments Photography Risk Assessment: Before I take the photos of the subject who I have chosen to be on my front covers for MIC and LIMIT, I need to make sure I have the permission to do so. This to be published online and printed. One way I did this is by using a consent form which is written with the Data Protection Act 1998. Using this consent form, gave me written permission by the subject with evidence to the legal conditions of use to make sure that their information is safe. Area Risk Assessment: Before I take the photos of the subject who I have chosen to be on my front covers for MIC and LIMIT, I need to make sure I have the area is safe to do so. Risk assessment of the area needs to guarantee safety of both of us, whether that includes weather conditions or other visible hazards. Software Risk Assessment – Resizing an image: When editing the images I need to make sure that I have resized the image corresponding to the original photo taken. One way I can do this, when using the free transform tool I need to press shift whilst using the mouse so that the image remains in same frame. Therefore, making the front cover look neat and professional to the audience.

  • 27. Royalties NLA Media Access is a media centered company that focuses on directly reducing time and expense for publishers creation. Moreover, acting collectively on behalf of publishers, NLA licences give you the permission without the need to seek approval from individual publishers. This establishes for my magazines and other magazines that are sold with licensing to NLA Media Access will receive the royalties if someone else wanted to include the information. NLA Media use their own ‘Code of Practice’ in which people that are wanting to know further about NLA and how they operate. Including essential information that can answer any question that a customer may have about their licencing policy and what would be the consequences if licenses are not valued/ complied with. That by using the NLA Media Access licence the customer is responsible for keeping the license up to date so it is eligible to be used in other forms of media. http://www.nlamediaaccess.com/default.aspx?tabid=127
  • 28. Issues (Regulatory & Legal, Ethical) Watermarking an image, is another form of copyrighting. This allows creators protect their creation so that others are unable to falsely claim their rights to the creation of the image. IP – Intellectual Property Rights allows owners and their trademarks to be profited from their own work and time. Watermarks need to be of specific nature on the image so it is unable to be changed by compression and other changes to the image. Watermarking an image is all about making a clear message to the individual that it should not be copied or used without consent from the creator. For any creator, without copyrighting their work, may hinder their chances or being able to reproduce content that they enjoy doing. Each media platform has their own form of copyright laws and regulation, however for some sufficient creators are unable to stand out above the rest. Using watermarking on their content guarantees safety but also potentially grants accreditation from individuals. There is no actual number on the pricing of the removal of the watermark from an image and mainly relies on the creators choice. For the watermark to be removed in the image below, the creator has not put a price on it and can find the original image on his blog page. One most common way to pay to remove a watermark from the image would find creative commons licensing on the publishers page where you pay a set or optional fee to use the image the creator has published. The Data Protection Act controls how your personal information is used by organizations, businesses or the government. Everyone responsible for using data has to follow strict rules called ‘data protection principles’. They must make sure the information is: used fairly and lawfully, accurate, kept safe and secure. This ensures that information within the business is maintained and compromised by others. Everyone in the business has to comply to these rules otherwise they could receive costly fines. Ethical Issues: When a magazine or any media product is being produced, the publisher will have to look at the consequences after its release. Whether or not they have targeted certain religions or cultures that are deemed to be vulnerable. This could be of ethnic groups, age, gender and sexual orientation then forth. If magazines do not take potential offences to the consumers it could possibly impact the brands reputation. http://zerogravity.me.uk/urban/#1
  • 29. Role of Relevant Regulatory Bodies The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) who are an independent regulator who set out rules and regulations that Media companies have to oblige to. They hold specifically newspapers and magazines to ‘account for their actions and protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press’. Specifically using the set out Editors code which is a copy of 16 rules that need to be followed in order for the magazine to be able to be released publically. If an Media company have not followed the allocated rules which are vastly accredited by others, will possibly result in prosecutions under Public acts and laws. The rules that IPSO set out are guidelines that my magazines would need to oblige to. If I do not, then my magazine is unable to be published to the public. Examples of topics in the Editors Code of Practice: • Accuracy • Privacy • Discrimination The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) are another independent regulator specifically targeting Advertising across all media. Their purpose is to make sure that advertising in the media industry are not false but instead ‘good’ for the audiences. In Addition, As well as acting on complaints, carry out many other regulatory activities to make sure advertising stays within the rules. For example, the ASA actively checks ads in all media and regularly conducts surveys of advertisements to make sure advertising is appropriate. https://www.ipso.co.uk/editors-code-of-practice/ https://www.asa.org.uk/About-ASA.aspx
  • 30. Accuracy (Editors Code of Practice) When I am producing the MIC magazine, I have to adhere to the IPSO Editors Code of Practice. If they don’t then the magazine is unable to be publically released. One topic being accuracy. This meaning that information in the magazine cannot be made up or misleading. For example, including an article on a medical treatment that is said to treat and cure a disease. The Sun being one of the main perpetrators for misleading headlines on front covers of their magazines. “Queen backs brexit” when there has been no official confirmation of this. “1 in 5 Muslims’ sympathy for jihadis” but there is no statistic to conclude this statement. Accuracy being 1 of 16 codes of practice that IPSO set out to protect audiences/readers and ultimately the magazine publishers. For the MIC Magazine I am more prone to misleading people in advertising about albums that are said to be releasing and reviews based upon it. If the reviews are very different to what the population believe the quality of the album is, then can be pointed at that as I would be therefore falsely advertising the album. And even if this is false, readers are able to complain. http://www.newyorker.com/science/maria-konnikova/headlines-change-way-think
  • 31. Copyright The copyright law 1988 has been set up to protect creators of any creative works. Material not protected by copyright is available for use by anyone without the author's consent. A copyright holder can prevent others from copying, performing or otherwise using the work without his or her permissions and people eligible to comply for illegal prosecutions if caught. The 1998 Law have now meant now any original content that is created but the creator is deemed to be copyrighted if someone else was to use it without consent. This benefitting music artists and media companies as then other people are not able to plagiarize and claim righteous money from them. https://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/uk_law_summary
  • 32. Conclusion From LO5, I covered many things which are based on the feedback that I was given from my Unit 13 LO4 Presentation on MIC and LIMIT. Moreover, I have also gathered additional feedback from the survey monkey survey that I put together prior to my presentation so that the audience is able to fill it out throughout it. This information is vital as I am able to collate both sources of data and analyse them thoroughly displayed in pie charts to conclude ideas based on my original ones. For both magazines, I also looked at IPSO and other issues which possibly may hinder the publication of them and took into consideration if my magazines meet the requirements set.
