The Internet is a powerful tool to reach people. Internet usage is growing in every country, especially because of Internet on the smartphone. Unfortunately, this tool is often neglected or underutilized by volunteers and professionals working in the dementia awareness and caregiving domain. Our current methods of reaching out families affected by dementia are unable to cover many segments of society, and the Internet is a tool we cannot afford to neglect any more. This presentation was made in the Asia Pacific Regional Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease International, held on 7-9 November, 2014, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, India. It discusses the possibilities and limitations of using the Internet to make information available and also to support families coping with dementia. It covers topics relevant to persons considering whether and how to use the Internet. These include content creation approaches and criteria, and how to increase the reach of online resources and services. The talk also covers aspects like community building, maintenance of online material, and how online resources can complement other modalities used for awareness and support. The presentation briefly discusses how organizations can approach the project of developing online resources.

People are your greatest asset – your own colleagues, as well as the people you serve. “People want to be a part of something bigger than themselves.” #H2H by @BryanKramer If your clients sense you’re open and engaged, they’ll be that way, too. Same goes for your staff. Principles for Digital Strategy at UNICEF Digital enables transparency and accountability. To the online audience, we are one UNICEF with many facets. We work in a multilingual world. Our content and engagement must reflect that. Content and engagement efforts should include people with low- or no- internet connectivity. All products and services should be mobile-first and multiplatform. Our product approach is agile. Open standards are at the heart of what we do. We’ll measure and test our efforts, using data to inform content and engagement choices. Conversations > Campaigns. Global frame, local action. Take a global message that national markets/teams can adapt. Messages and calls to action should be easily tailored and localized by language, country. Have one integrated editorial calendar. Media, marketing, web, social, offline, visuals. Team: balance all-rounders with deep expertise. Do fewer things better. Find the storyteller in the elevator.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) participated in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) GeoCloud Program in 2012. The GeoCloud initiative provides selected agencies an Amazon Web Services (AWS) hosting platform to on-ramp their geospatial applications. ED migrated its on-premises ArcGIS for Server for the School District Demographic Data System (SDDS) Map Viewer (http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/sdds) to Amazon EC2. SDDS is publicly available and allows access to information about demographics, social characteristics, and economics of children and school districts from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Using GeoCloud, ED gained experience with cloud-based Windows 2008R2 Server and Esri ArcGIS 10.1 for Server platform. It has been almost one year now and we'll reflect on various lessons learned including planning, security/hardening, AWS console, server configuration, reliability, licensing, and backup strategy. We will discuss the current state of our server deployments and future plans for ED in the Cloud.
