Margit Brazda Poirier, GPC, M.S. will share the exact seven steps that helped her raise over $20MM in grant funding for her clients so that you can do it too!
5. Staff
Equipment
Training
Travel
Insurance
Supplies
Occupancy/Rent
Overhead
…almost everything.
Program Costs
Operating Costs
Capital Costs
6. Over 427 billion given in grants and
donations to charity last year (Giving USA)
87,000 grant-making foundations in the U.S.
and thousands of state and federal grants
(Foundation Center/Candid)
1.5 million not-for-profits in the U.S. (National Center
for Charitable Statistics)
7. This is the FIRST thing you should explore
Depends on the type of grant:
Federal government or State government
Foundation
Corporation
8. NONPROFIT organizations need proof of status:
501(c)3 IRS Determination Letter
Most foundations can only issue grants to
organizations that have this IRS designation (or
a church, public or private school, municipality,
etc…)
9. Over 1,000 government grant opportunities
More than 87,000 grant making foundations
in the U.S.
Some will be perfect for YOUR organization
10. Identify ONE project or program that needs
grant funding
Why a Program/Project?
But what if ALL my projects need funding?
11. Make a list of 3-5 programs that need
funding.
◦ New program?
◦ Existing program?
◦ Outcomes you can measure?
◦ Can you start now?
◦ Urgent or time-sensitive?
12. Who benefits from your program = Target Audience
Geographic location
Demographics
Groups
What is their unique challenge?
13. …Getting stuck on which program to select for
grant funding.
By starting with ONE, you lay the groundwork
for all the other grant applications you will
write.
Trust me… it gets much easier!
14. You can’t do this alone. Be sure to gather your
support team as early as possible.
These are people that can get you the data you
need (including critical budget figures).
Your team can help you plan out all the program
details from start to finish, making your job of
writing the grant that much easier!
15. Executive Director
Chief Financial Officer
Development Director
Marketing Staff
Program Staff
Representatives from partnering
organizations
16. BIG time-saver…
While each grant application is a little bit
different, they tend to require similar
documents that you can gather NOW before a
grant deadline.
17. IRS Letter of Determination
Board of Directors List
IRS 990 Tax Return
Audited Financial Statements or an Audit
Review*
Operating Budget
Year-end Financial Statement or Budget to
Actuals
18. Annual Report
Strategic Plan
Organization Chart
Letters of Support
Staff Resumes/Bios
Memorandum of Understanding
Cost Estimates and/or Vendor Quotes
19. To apply for government grant opportunities
(federal or state grants) you need to do a few
critical registrations.
TIP: Start these EARLY!
20. 1) DUNS (Data Universal Numbering System)
number: http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform
2) SAM (System for Award Management)
registration: www.sam.gov
Registration is free
Beware of email scams.
21. 3) Register on grants.gov using your DUNS
and SAM numbers.
Grants.gov is the electronic portal you will
use to apply for federal grants.
22. Check your local state web sites to learn
more.
For example, in New York State, the
registration site is called Grants Gateway:
https://grantsmanagement.ny.gov/
23. Waiting too long to get all the registrations done.
And then missing a critical once-a-year grant
deadline because you didn’t have the
preliminaries complete.
That’s why this prep work is soooooo important.
24. You have selected your
ONE perfect project or
program.
You know your target
audience.
Now…time to find YOUR
perfect funder(s)!
27. Government Grants
Community Foundations
Private Foundations (Family/Independent)

30. Your work = funder’s mission/interest area
Geographic area?
Are you an eligible applicant?
Range of funding ($ amount)
Cost match requirements
Deadline
After: Can you manage funds and deliver final
reports?
Foundation or Government Grants?
31. Identify a problem or need
Decide which programs need funding,
for what, and how much?
Creating a new program OR funding
an existing program?
32. Show positive IMPACT (with Outcomes)
What needs to change and how?
What will you do to make the change?
Who is the “target population”?
What is better for your target population as a
result of your program/project?
33. Examples:
Youth that participate in the mentoring
program will stay in school, with improved
grades and a greater likelihood of
graduation.
Youth will gain exposure to opportunities in
the workforce that may determine their
future career trajectory.

planned project.
35. Needs or Problem Statement
Organizational Capacity
Target Population Served
Partnerships or Collaboration
