What is a flipped classroom and is it all that’s it’s cracked up to be?

Why change the lecture ?
“Lectures represent a conception of education in which teachers who know
give knowledge to students who do not and are therefore supposed to have
nothing worth contributing” . (Bligh, 2000)
According to Armstrong (2012) lecturing is not, “the most effective method
for promoting student thought, changing attitudes, or teaching behaviourial
skills”.
Why are people questioning the lecture format?
Flipped
Students watch pre- recorded video before class.
Either post questions to discussion forum or come
to class with questions.
Lecture time is used to work through questions or
activities and this allows lecturer to circulate and
assist students.
Use a virtual classroom session to give external
students the same opportunity.
Scrambled
Flip student/lecturer role for ten minutes
Group work problems, investigations.
Use a collaborative document (wiki in Moodle, Google doc)
Student response system to test student
understanding.

Flipped classroom

  • 1. FLIPPED OR SCRAMBLED What is a flipped classroom and is it all that’s it’s cracked up to be?

Why change the lecture ? “Lectures represent a conception of education in which teachers who know give knowledge to students who do not and are therefore supposed to have nothing worth contributing” . (Bligh, 2000) According to Armstrong (2012) lecturing is not, “the most effective method for promoting student thought, changing attitudes, or teaching behaviourial skills”.
  • 4. Why are people questioning the lecture format?
  • 5. Flipped Students watch pre- recorded video before class. Either post questions to discussion forum or come to class with questions. Lecture time is used to work through questions or activities and this allows lecturer to circulate and assist students. Use a virtual classroom session to give external students the same opportunity.
  • 6. Scrambled Flip student/lecturer role for ten minutes Group work problems, investigations. Use a collaborative document (wiki in Moodle, Google doc) Student response system to test student understanding.
