this discussion, select the case vignette for your specialization (Mental Health or School
Counseling) from the presentation, Multicultural Competence – Case Study, from this week’s
first study and put yourself in the position of the counselor working with the clients or
student in this situation.As discussed in your Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in
Counseling text, clients and students have the right to know about the counseling process
and relationship prior to engaging in a counseling relationship with you. We call this
process “informed consent.” In this process, we give the client or student information,
ensure that he or she understands this information, and obtain verbal and written consent
for services.Ethically and legally, a counselor must explore several items with their
prospective clients prior to commencing services with them.In this discussion, you will
practice implementing informed consent with the selected case study hypothetical client in
the form of a role play in the role of a counseling-in-training intern (CMHC/SC graduate
program site-based learning: practicum and internships). Feel free to complete this role
play with a peer, friend, or family member.See the Counseling: Informed Consent
presentation as an example of this process between a counselor and client. Also, see Week
02 Discussion Template – Informed Consent Template [DOCX] to help guide you through
this process.One area to consider will be if you need to include a section concerning
telemental health services. It will be important to check your state’s guidance concerning
this. (CMHC: State Board for counselors and specific agency policy; SC: Department of
Education and specific school district policies.) Feel free to choose a hypothetical site where
you will be conducting services.How you approach this role play will depend on the setting,
age of the person, or the client/student’s cognitive functioning capabilities. Furthermore,
cultural context needs to be taken into consideration.For your role play, practice the
following:Introduce yourself and your role as a counselor.Explain the client/student’s rights
within the counseling relationship (include noting their right to revoke consent).Explain
confidentiality and its limits related to counseling (remember to consider if they are an
adult or minor).Identify how you will keep the personal information private (consider
whether there will be paper or electronic case notes, recordings, or if you are meeting face-
to-face or in a virtual setting).Be sure to provide your client/student with the opportunity
to ask questions for clarification.You are recommended to record your session and review

improvement. Counselors have the ethical duty to monitor their effectiveness (ACA, 2014,
C.2.d.).You can either submit a 2–3 minute video recording or transcriiption to highlight a
section as part of your discussion post. If you choose to include a transcriipt, please use CO
to indicate what the counselor says and CL to indicate what the client says. For example:CO:
