2. In Germany at Christmastime or Weihnachten,
the children hang boots or shoes in the
chimney.
The traditional German celebrating begins on
Dec. 6th, St Nicholas Day.
3. During the night of Christmas Eve, St. Nicholas
will visit each house and determine who has
been naughty or nice, the same as in America.
The children who have been good will find
delicious candies in the boots that they have
hung in the fireplace. The children who were
bad will instead find twigs.
The angel of Christmas called Christkind who
is a messenger of Christ Child brings baskets of
toys to the children on Christmas Day.
4. On Dec. 26th, St. Stephen’s Day friends and family
gather in a tradition called “Christbaumloben”.
During this time, friends and family visit
eachother in their homes. When they arrive they
announce themselves with the phrase “Ein
schoener Baum” meaning “A nice tree”. They do
this at each house they visit.
On Christmas Day the family gathers for an
evening feast but before this is presented everyone
gathers to decorate the tree and all the presents are
placed underneath.
5. For the Christmas day banquet, many wonderful dishes are
made. These include things like roast goose, long loaves of
bread stuffed with nuts, raisins, citrus and a dried fruit like
Christstollen, marzipan, Lebkuchen or Dresden Stollen.
The traditional Christmas season drinks are:
Gluhwein which is a mulled wine
Kinderpunsch: a non alcoholic beverage made with tea,
apple juice, and honey
Christmas ale also known as winter ale.
6. Germany has many of the same Christmas songs as we do such as “Silent
Night” or in German “Stille Nacht” and “ Little Drummer Boy” or “Der
kleine Trommier”
Stille Nacht
“Silent Night” in German DEUTSCH
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Halleluja,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah:
Christ, der Retter ist da!
Christ, der Retter ist da!
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'.
Christ, in deiner Geburt!
Christ, in deiner Geburt!
8. In Germany, the Christmas season actually
starts on the 1st Sunday of Advent or
Adventszeit, 4 weeks before Christmas. On
this day, families will gather to set up an
Advent wreath which has 4 candles on it that
will be lit each Sunday until Christmas. This
wreath provides the evergreen in the house
until Christmas Eve when the tree is unveiled.
