This document summarizes sessions for preparing for the CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) exam. It outlines topics that will be covered in three preparation sessions, including understanding users and their traits, materials, mechanics, and manufacturing, and general knowledge. It provides more detail on understanding users, the 3M topics, and what to focus on before the exam, emphasizing visualization over lengthy written answers. The goal is to help exam takers feel prepared for the variety of question types they may encounter on the CEED.

• General knowledge and awareness
• Before the examination

5. User, User Traits
• Know your user
• Traits: Character, behavior, personality,
age, qualities, knowledge etc.
• Think about the traits of some typical
users like Kids, girls, women, men, aged
people
• User liking and usual patterns and
perception about shape, color, size
Imagine spherical mobile, cube shaped
tea cup, black doctors operating gown,
red color washing machine
• Ensure you add notes about your
thoughts

6. 3M: Materials, Mechanics & Manufacturing
• Materials: Know what is used for what, know little detail. Example every
kid in town knows plastic and steel. You need to be more specific, know
the need and answer
• Mechanics: Engineers know this better, make use of this knowledge. (link
mechanisms, rotations, conversions, etc)
• Manufacturing: Know basics of manufacturing processes for plastics,
metals and wood like forming, extrusion, injection molding, rolling etc. (Say
how do you make coins? How to manufacture a straw)

8. General Knowledge and awareness
1. Let’s 1st lets understand why is this needed?
2. GK and CEED?
– This is not must have, but there may be some
questions around this
– Ideal is to know who’s who, different key events
across time.
– Current and last few years key news articles.

9. Before the Examination
• Do some planning about how you want to answer different questions
Ex. - for a design problem you may think of solution diagram, small 2/3 key points USPs of the design and 2/3
points about key problems your design solves .
• Decide on your own styles
• Know that there is a competition and you are not alone.
Good concept with bad sketch Vs average concept with well planned answer and sketch – think
what will be picked. So just best idea may not win!
• Have some differentiator with you be it by your drawing, colors,
imagination skills, materials you use or can even be a layout of your
answers, etc.
• Be little creative and unusual
• Keep in mind to explain your thoughts, but do not write pages/essays of
content as CEED is more visual
• Do not get overwhelmed or depressed by other CEED aspirants who come
with lots of gadgets and gizmos to the examination
• Refer at least one old paper to know what kind of questions you will face

10. Before the Examination
You may be blank, you may think I have not
prepared but do not worry it’s usual.
CEED is not like usual academics where you have
to upload tons of data till exam in your head
and download it in exam
