REFERSTO A SET OF
OBJECTS ARRANGED IN A
DEFINITE ORDER.
 Example: In how many ways can three books
statistics, algebra and biology be arranged on a
shelf?
solution:
P=n!
P=3! = 6ways
(3 x 2=6)
Note: you may use also your scientific calculator
by entering the number and press the sign !
 Example: How many 5 letter words can be
formed from the word FORMALITY?
Solution:
= 9! (9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2=362,880)
(9-5)! (4 x 3 x 2 =24)
= 15, 120 words
Example: How many ways can 4 red flags, 3
blue flags and 2 white flags be arranged on a
line?
Solution:
P= 9! = 362880
4! 3! 2! (24)(6)(2)
P= 1260 ways
 Example: In how many ways can 8 guests be
seated in a round table with 8 chairs?
Solution:
P= (8-1)!
= 7! = 5, 040 ways
