2. Introduction
Shot Blasting is a surface treatment process using high
stream of abrasive material.
Mechanical force is used to propel blast media such as
sand, sponge or glass beads at the surface to be
cleaned to remove contaminants such as paint ,rust,
corrosive layer etc.
Can be performed in closed environments like blasting
chambers or cabinets, or on open sites such as
buildings, bridges, tanks, boats or mobile plant.

4. Components
Shot blasting systems are comprised of 6 basic subsystems:
1. Abrasive powder delivery method(Hopper):
By Compressed Air & Gravity
2. P U Pipes & Nozzles
3. Blast Cabinet
4.Motor Mechanism for holding job
5.Dust collector & Blower
6. Part movement and support system.
5. Working
• The process involves using high pressure to blast fine bits of
abrasive material onto the surface.
• It is a surface treatment process which involves projecting beads
on the work piece to change its surface state.
6. Advantages
Low Energy Demands
High Quality Of Treated Surfaces
Good Potentials For Process Automation For
Cleaning Surfaces Such As Steel, Bricks, Cement
And Concrete
Obtain Excellent Cleaning And Surface
Preparation For Secondary Finishing Operations
Removal of corrosion on metals in industrial
processes.
7. Applications
Cleaning a surface by removing unwanted rust,
scale, paint, etc.
Change metallurgical properties or stress relieve a
part by the peening action of multiple impactions.
Mechanical cleaning of iron, steel, non-cast
parts, forgings, sheets, rods, coils, wire, etc.
Produce a desired matte or decorative finish.
8. Factors Affecting The Shot
Blasting Process
Initial condition of the component – material and
contamination
Velocity of abrasive
Size (and shape) of abrasive
Hardness of abrasive
Revolving speed of work piece
9. Safety & Precautions
Use a less-toxic abrasive material
Use exhaust ventilation systems in containment
structures to capture dust
Use perfectly isolated blast rooms or blast cabinets
Implementation of Personal Protective Equipment
