What is Architecture ?
Architecture is a study which deals with
planning, designing and construction
of building and structures like houses,
apartments, offices and industrial complexes,
hospitals, hotels, airport terminals, stadiums,
commercial complexes, schools, etc.
Specialisations in Architecture can be divided
into industrial design, urban design, landscape
architecture, town planning, environmental
planning, building engineering and transport
planning etc.

How is Architecture as a
profession in India ?

the future career prospects of
architects are safe and secure.

What are the Job Opportunities for an architect?
Architects are responsible for the functional, safety,
economical aspects of a building and if they make a
name fulfilling all the three aspects, then their career

career prospects of architects are safe and secure. In the
government sector, an architect can work with the central
and state public work departments, housing and urban
development corporation, municipalities, city development
authorities and state housing boards. In the private sector,
industrial ventures, consultancy and private architectural
firms, teaching institutions, real estate development firms
etc. The most privileged scope in the field of architecture
is private practice. With some years of experience in an
organisation, the architects can set up their own business.

Are the number of graduates from
architecture colleges enough for India?
As far as architects are concerned,
there is a huge gap in the demand
and supply. Annual requirement
projections of architects stands
over 10,000 which is expected
to rise further and the training
facilities available are still short.

Places where Architects work
Employment opportunities for architects are available in
government as well as private sectors. Some of the government
organisations include Public Works Department, the
Archaeological Department, Ministry of Defence, Departments
of Railways, Post and Telegraphs, Public Sector Undertakings,
National Building Organisation, Town and Country Planning
Organisation, National Institute of Urban Affairs, Housing and
Urban Development Corporation, National Building Construction
Corporation Ltd., City Development Authorities etc. Besides
these organisations, various other institutes and agencies like
State Departments, Housing Boards, Local Bodies responsible for
construction works also recruit architects.
Openings in the private sector exist with the Builders, Architecture
Firms, Consultants etc. Architects with some experience can even
set up their own business as Consultants and Contractors.

NATA
National Aptitude Test in Architecture
The National Aptitude Test in Architecture
(NATA) measures the aptitude of the
applicant for specific field of study,
i.e. Architecture. The test measures
drawing and observation skills, sense
of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity and
critical thinking ability, that have been
acquired over a long period of time, and
that are related to specific field of study,
i.e. Architecture.

ELIGIBILITY
Any person having passed SSC (Std X) or equivalent
examination can appear for NATA, however,
candidates having minimum 50% marks in 10+2 or
equivalent examination with mathematics as one
of the subject, only are eligible for admission to
B.Arch. Course.

TEST CONTENT
The test is in two parts. A paper
based drawing test and computer
based online aesthetic sensitivity test.
The test measures aptitude of the
candidate through two sections - a
paper based section for drawing and
computer based section for aesthetic
sensitivity.

This is a two hour paper where candidate has to attempt three
questions. The drawing aptitude is judged on the following aspects -
• Ability to sketch a given object proportionately and rendering the
same in visually appealing manner.
• Visualising and drawing the effects of light on the object and
shadows cast on surroundings.
• Sense of perspective drawing.
• Combining and composing given three dimensional elements to
form a building or structural form.
• Creating interesting two dimensional composition using given
shapes and
• Creating visual harmony using colours in given composition.
• Understanding of scale and proportions.
• Drawing from memory through pencil sketch on themes from day to
day experiences.
DRAWING TEST

This is computer based test where candidate has to answer 40
multiple choice questions.
The aesthetic sensitivity test measures perception, imagination and
observation, creativity and communication along with architectural
awareness and comprises of -
• Visualising three dimensional objects from two dimensional
drawings.
• Visualising different sides of three dimensional objects.
• Identifying commonly used materials and objects based on their
textural qualities.
• Analytical reasoning.
• Mental Ability.
• Imaginative comprehension and expression.
• Architectural awareness.

several participating State Governments,
and several other Institutions shall
include the performance in the class 12/
other Qualifying Examination and in the
Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main).

ELIGIBILITY AGE for JEE 2013
Any person having passed
SSC (Std X) or equivalent
examination can appear
for JEE, however,
candidates having
minimum 50% marks
in 10+2 or equivalent
examination with
mathematics as one of the
subject, only are eligible
for admission to B.Arch.
Course.
Only those candidates whose date
of birth falls on or after October
01, 1988 are eligible. However,
in the case of Scheduled Caste
(SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and
Persons with Disabilities (PwD)
candidates, upper age limit is
relaxed by 5 years, i.e. SC, ST and
PwD candidates who were born
on or after October 01, 1983 are
eligible. Date of birth as recorded
in the Secondary Education Board/
University certificate will only be
considered.
JEE Main Paper 2

YEAR OF PASSING QUALIFYING EXAMINATION
Only those candidates who have passed their Class 12th Exam
or any other qualifying examination in 2011 or 2012; or those who
are appearing in their Class 12th Exam or any other qualifying
examination in 2013 are eligible to appear in JEE (Main) - 2013.
Candidates who passed Class 12th/Qualifying examination in 2010 or
before as well as those who will appear in such examination in 2014 or
later are not eligible to appear in JEE (Main)-2013.
Candidates who appeared in class 12th/other Qualifying Examinations
in 2010, did not pass in 2010, but passed in 2011 are also not eligible to
appear in JEE (Main) 2013.
Candidates must have taken at least five subjects in class 12th/any
other Qualifying examination in order to be eligible for writing JEE
(Main). In the year 2013 however, the candidates who have taken four
subjects are also permitted to write JEE 2013 as an exception.
