The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a wireless network between everyday objects that allows them to communicate with each other and be remotely monitored and controlled. IoT has the potential to improve resource utilization, foster better relationships between humans and nature, and create an integrated system linking physical systems and human society. Key enabling technologies for IoT include increased processing power, smart phones, new small sensors, cloud/big data capabilities, power-efficient devices, and wireless connectivity standards. A generic IoT architecture features objects that sense and gather information which is then transmitted wirelessly via gateways to the cloud for analysis and storage.
