Action films is a genre which includes violence, combat, chases and fast
paced scenes. It also usually includes life-threatening situations for the
protagonist, an antagonist and when the film concludes, the
protagonist or hero is victorious. Action films began to develop in the
1970s, with more stunts and special effects being used. Historians
consider the film The Great Train Robbery to be the first action film.
The James Bond film series has become a very successful action film
series, also inspiring future action films with a protagonist who is
viewed as a hero.
3. Comedy
Comedy is a genre of film which has main emphasis on humour, aiming
to amuse the audience and make them laugh. Character traits are
usually exaggerated for effect. Comedies also have bright colourful
lighting, while a sub genre, horror comedy could have dark lighting.
Famous actors in the comedy genre include Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell
and Jim Carrey. A few examples of comedy films include the anchorman
films, step brothers and Jack and Jill.
4. Horror
Horror is a genre which has a main purpose to seek a negative reaction
from viewers by playing at their fears and scaring them. Horror films
also have an eerie sense to them, creating tense situations for
audiences. Horror films tend to always have dark lighting to create an
eerie effect, while bright lighting represents happiness. An example of a
horror film is the paranormal activity series.
5. Crime
The crime genre is a film that revolves around a crime story or crime
that is being committed or was committed, the crime genre is usually
put into the action or adventure genres. A few examples of crime films
include the godfather film series, lawless and the mesrine film series.
6. Adventure
The adventure genre tends to be about a protagonist who goes on a
journey to distant places in order to accomplish something, while
having other genre elements in it. A few film examples include the
indian jones film series, the star wars film series and the lord of the
rings series.
