1. 1) In what way does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
2. Romantic Comedy plots:
The conventions of romantic comedy films typically involve two young attractive people who fall in love
through unusual circumstances with something keeping the pair apart. The couple face many
obstacles before they finally get together at the end of the film where they do 'live happily ever after'.
The couple usually have differing personalities which make them seem unsuitable at first until they
finally get along and realise that they love each other. The writer and director hints that the couple
will become a couple throughout the film through subtle details.
The obstacles that the couple face usually entail another partner of either the male or the female
protagnist or that the couple feel that they should not be together. The two main characters normally
bump into each other a couple of times befpre going out together and beoming partners.
In some Rom Com's there is a love triangle where the female has to choose between two suitors. The
suitors try to win her love through countless efforts which end with them both looking silly. At the
beginning of these films, the female likes the 'bad buy' who cheats but at the end of the film she
realises she is in love with the sweet man who has fancied her all along. These plots are shown in
such films as 'Bridget Jones Diary' and 'Life As We Know It.'
Our film uses these conventions with our storyngline being that the male protagonist has a girlfiend but
his best friend (the female protagonist) fancies him. This will be an obstacle throughout the film
before something brings them together.
3. Film Titles and Fonts:
Most films follow the conventional opening titles with the name of the
distribution company logo first followed by the production company
logo. After this, the producer or director is shown followed by the
actors who are starring in the film with the name of the film coming
after this. However, we have gone against the conventional forms of
opening titles with putting our film title after our production company.
We did this because it looked better and applied well with the
opening scene.
Also we came up with the original idea to display some of our opening
titles using beads, a phone, a mirror and some toothpaste so as to
make the opening more interesting for the audience.
Most Rom Coms have the conventional bright red, purple and pink
colours with bold fonts to make the title stand out. The colours attract
the target demographic of 15-24 year olds. One initial idea for our film
title was to make the title 2 different colours; white and pink. However,
we changed this and decided to use a white feminine font that is
conventional.
4. Setting:
Most Rom Coms are set in the house/flat of the main protagonist. Some scenes
are also shot in bars, parks and the workplace of the main protagonist.
Our opening scene was shot in the house of the female protagonist and the
park which is using the conventions of romantic comedy films.
