ASME Solidworks Week:
4. Current States
Manufacturing cost is rising drastically.
Supply chain is broken with short of chips and parts.
Ordering lead time goes from 4 weeks to 52 weeks.
Suppliers are cutting back on inventories and parts.
Shipment is severely delayed and held up at ports.
To Survive
Cut down too much prototyping.
Design product for manufacturing.
Eliminate any inefficiency in workflow and process.
Test your design using virtual 3D models.
Validate design using smaller assemblies.
Extreme Agile using collaboration platforms.
Leverage the power of Solidworks.
Matter for Mechanical Engineers
Companies want ME to cut down any wasteful process.
You must finish your work in much shorter time.

8. My advise is you should start planning in your first and second year.
Learn the industry now. One way is to join ASME Student Chapter.
13. Solidworks is limited to 20% market share in the CAD software. You must prepare to
acquire sufficient drafting skills to transfer to other CAD softwares.
14.
15. A Mechanical Engineer plays a critical role in Design, Prototyping, Manufacturing, and
Assembly. You work with suppliers, factories, Electrical Engineers (EE), Firmware
Engineers (SW), Product team, and Operation team.
16. When you work on a product that has more than 50 unique mechanical parts and
electronic components you need a collaboration platform to sharing files and
manage version control.
17. • Github for version control
• Github Desktop for syncing files
• Github Project for Agile Scrum such as
Kanban Dashboard
• Github Wiki for sharing and updating
documents

30. Cost of Alpha Version
In Good Days
Each PCB set (5-7 pcs) $10K
2 wk spec + 4 wk design + 2 wk PCB + 2 wk supplies + 4
wk PCBA + 2 wk testing + 4 wk shipping (minimal 16 wk)
Each Metal + Plastic set (10-12 pcs) $4K
2 wk spec + 8 wk design + 2 wk assembly
+ 2 wk testing + 4 wk shipping (minimal 16 wk)
Firmware Development $5K
8 wk dev + 4 wk testing
The last version of Product Design
before Beta version going to
manufacturing tooling.
Alpha vs Beta
31. PWM is a way to control analog devices with a digital output. Another way to put it is that you can output a modulating signal from a digital device such as an MCU to drive an analog device.

34. 3D Printer Costs
Hobby 3D Printers $300-$1500
Professional 3D Printers $3500-$6000
Enthusiast 3D Printers $1500-$3500
Appearance Model is demonstrate the look and feel of the
finished product design while Functional Model is to show
a basic model with fully functional hardware and firmware.
Appearance vs Functional Model
Our model is using the Industrial grade 3M Adhesive, ANSI
metric M3 Tapping screws and Countersunk screws, and
seamless double layer acoustic fabric for our speakers
3D Printer Filaments
ABS Plastic with melting
temperature of 200°C and can
withstand 80°C

38. What is MCAD
Sheet Metal Parts
Injection Plastic Parts
Custom PCBA
Commercial Boards
Electronics
What is ECAD
Putting screws and wires together to connect
all the electronic components to mechanical
parts in an assembly
What is MCAD/ECAD Assembly
M = Mechanical
E = Electronic
Product Assembly = MCAD + ECAD + Integration
39. Fast & Less Work = Cut Costs
Import Solidworks Parts from S/W Professionals
directly to S/W Composer
Render Part Table from BOM Table in S/W
Composer
No 2D redrawing
Use directly in Assembly Manual for factories to
eliminate any errors in communication
Export as Interactive Web Page
S/W 2022 allow you to freely zoom, pan, and rotate
the model on a web page or inside PDF
