3. Trouble in Paradise?
Here’s the scenario: You’re traveling to
a tropical island for business or
pleasure, say Bali (Indonesia).
Unfortunately, your suitcase doesn’t
arrive, and at the Lost Luggage Desk
you have difficulty describing your
belongings. Source : http://tinyurl.com/baliair
What’s more, your wallet, which
contained your passport, was stolen, so
you can’t even identify yourself. Is there
anything you could have done to prepare
for this nightmare situation?

4. Trouble in Paradise?
Actually, there is. Most people now own digital cameras
(or a mobile with an integrated camera), so before
leaving home you could have taken pictures of your
suitcases and what was in them. You could also have
taken pictures of your passport, driver’s license, credit
cards, etc. Then you could have e-mailed all of these
pictures to yourself so that you could access and
download them at any Internet café in the world,
including Bali!

5. Paying Less in Paradise?
Upon arriving at the airport, you grab a cab towards your hotel.
Several cab drivers walk up to you, smiling. Most of them are
extremely friendly to you. So, when they ask you a couple of
innocent questions about how your flight was and if this is the
first time you are visiting this country, most people don’t know
that the price just tripled when they enthusiastically nodded
YES ☺ You don’t know the local prices, so they take
advantage of that. Or did you never wondered why the price of
going to the airport is always less than half (even a third) ?
TIP: If they don’t lower their price enough, just walk
away to another taxi. Even make them take your stuff
out of the trunk if necessary. Make the effort, because
the price suddenly drops magically ☺

6. Paying Less in Paradise?
TIP: Always tell the cab driver that it’s your 2nd or 3rd trip,
knowing this place and also the rates. Make sure you always
bargain on their first price suggestion by saying: « Last time I
paid less than half. Are you mistaking me for a first time
tourist? Cut me a deal here, ok? »
Drivers often mistake your intended destination for another similar
sounding street at the opposite side of town. Tell them to take the
shortest route, because otherwise they’ll take you on an unwanted
tour around the city, resulting in yet a higher rate.
TIP: Make sure the meter is working fine if you don’t agree on a fixed
rate upfront! Pretending the meter doesn’t work is a tric as old as the
streets. You end up paying more! Get it fixed or get out ☺

7. Lost in Paradise?
Tip: Before you leave your hotel, take a picture of the
hotel entrance. Take the front entrance or the side
of the hotel which is most visible from the street.
Make sure the hotel’s name is on it.
Tip: If it’s too dark or undoable of taking a picture, take
one of the address card of the hotel instead,
including their phone number.

8. Lost in Paradise?
Now, if you go into town and you want to come back but you
don’t speak the language, just show the picture of your hotel
to the cab driver. He’ll certainly know it or he can show it to a
colleague.
Tip: You can also use this for street signs, schedule of the bus
hours, subway plans, etc.
