Quiet zone response to chatham courier.
1. Hi Karrie, Thanks for getting in touch with me. I remember you vividly, that was one huge
bookbag.
The Facebook page was launched in an effort to express concerns about the sound intensity
and frequency of the railroad trains that run through our village. The petition was created as an
informational option for Villagers as a choice to either support or not support.
The establishment of âQuiet Zonesâ are being implemented with success across all of the
United States. In fact, as of October 2015, the Federal Railroad Administration has received
over 665 Quiet Zone Notification packages.
It is understandable that safety is of primary concern. Locomotive horns are still used in
emergencies and in compliance with Federal regulations within all established âQuiet Zonesâ.
Further, each public highway-rail crossing with a âQuiet Zoneâ must be equipped with active
warning devices such as flashing lights, gates, constant warning time devices, and power out
indicators. Medians, channelization devices, one way streets with gates, four quadrant gate
systems, and crossing closures are also options that would enhance safety.
It has been documented in a FRA âsponsored report â that train horns impact both people and
wildlife. There are psychological, as well as physiological effects. Of significant interest is the
impact that noise has on childrenâs cognitive effects, especially in the areas of reading,
attention, problem solving, and memory.
Again, the petition is meant to serve as an informational option. If there is momentum to
support a âQuiet Zoneâ within the Village â then the petition is a positive vehicle for change. If
not, at least itâs recognized as a choice. A survey of Villagers willing to voice their thoughts
would prove to be a valuable resource in ascertaining the âQuiet Zoneâsâ level of importance
and support within our community.
It is unfortunate that there are so many discriminatory and derogatory remarks regarding this
petition on Facebook. While everyone has a right to voice their opinion, it seems unnecessary,
unhelpful, and undignified to comment in such an egregious manner.
Sincerely,
Ben Thomas
