BULKHEADS CONSTRUCTION-
SOLAS CH. II-2,
 Fire protection, fire detection and fire extinction.
These classes are based essentially on
construction methods and materials.
 An approved non combustible materials is one
that neither burns nor gives off enough
flammable vapor to self ignite when heated to
about 1382o
F (750o
C).
 These classes are further divided into subclasses
based on the temperature of the opposite side of the
materials over a period of time.

SELF CONTAINED BREATHING
APPARATUS
 demand type breathing apparatus is being used
increasingly aboard merchant ships. Its popularity stems
from its convenience, the fact that it supplies the user
with cool fresh air, the speed with which it can be put into
service and its versatility.
 the demand type apparatus gets its name from the
functioning of the regulator, which controls the flow of air
to the facepiece. The regulator supplies air “on demand”,
i.e. it supplies the user with air when he needs it and in
the amount his respiratory system requires. It thus
supplies different users with different rates, depending on
their “demand”.

 New model demand type breathing apparatus
are being supplied with a positive flow to the
facepiece. The slight pressure in the facepiece
prevents contaminated air from entering the
facepiece and getting into the respiratory tract.
The positive air pressure lessens the critical
nature of the fit against the user’s face.

 Outer surface of the suit is covered with a highly
reflective material reflecting as much as 90% of the
radiant heat. It may be used to approach close to a
fire but IT IS NOT DESIGNED TO PROTECT THE
WEARER DURING DIRECT CONTACT WITH
FLAMES.
 A self contained breathing apparatus must be
worn under the proximity suit, otherwise the
intense heat near the fire can damage the
wearer’s respiratory tract.

Rescue and Salvage Operation on Ships
 Rescue of trapped crewmember and passenger is
an extremely important aspect of every fire fighting
operation.
 Once crew members have gathered at their muster
station and are accounted for, a search for missing
person can begin
 Passengers are also assigned a muster station and
lifeboat station and the officer in charge has a list of
passengers assigned to that station.

 If the rescue attempt is delayed an attack could
pose the fire into an area where one or more
individuals are trapped.
 A holding action maybe feasible while an alternative
route is used to make a rescue. The decision
involves the two fold problem of protecting lives and
protecting a vessel.
 A delay in controlling the fire due to important
rescue attempts could result in an uncontrollable
fire, forced abandonment and loss of the vessel and
possibly loss of many more lives.

are available to bring victims to safety. Assess the
situation and the physical layout to determine which
technique and equipment to use. Some victim may
have to be carried up or down the ladders or raised

 Clothes drag - one person can rescue a victim who
may be either conscious or unconscious and the victim
can be moved on horizontal surface without bending the
victim’s body. Drag the victim to safety by holding onto
the clothes (short/blouse/coach collar)
 Two person extremities carry - more than one
person maybe available to rescue a victim who may be
either conscious or unconscious. One rescuer hold the
victim on the same way as the two arm drag. The other
rescuer faces the victim, stands between the victim legs
and hold one leg with each hand. Both rescuer then

  • 13. Far East Maritime Foundation, Inc. Redo II Bldg., Remedios cor, Sn Marcelino Sts. Malate Manila SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS  demand type breathing apparatus is being used increasingly aboard merchant ships. Its popularity stems from its convenience, the fact that it supplies the user with cool fresh air, the speed with which it can be put into service and its versatility.  the demand type apparatus gets its name from the functioning of the regulator, which controls the flow of air to the facepiece. The regulator supplies air “on demand”, i.e. it supplies the user with air when he needs it and in the amount his respiratory system requires. It thus supplies different users with different rates, depending on their “demand”. FEMFI-R-TD-015 Revision No.: 01 Date: 12-05-06 Approved by: CAS Page 11 of 51
  • 14. Far East Maritime Foundation, Inc. Redo II Bldg., Remedios cor, Sn Marcelino Sts. Malate Manila  New model demand type breathing apparatus are being supplied with a positive flow to the facepiece. The slight pressure in the facepiece prevents contaminated air from entering the facepiece and getting into the respiratory tract. The positive air pressure lessens the critical nature of the fit against the user’s face.
