History of Child Literature
Today, our topic is Child concept&children's literature:History of overview. To begin with,I
want to ask some questions abou this topic. And than ı will begin to talk about this topic. And
this is my first question.
WHAT IS CHILD?
Child: A young human being below the age of puberty or below the legal age of majority. This
denotation meaning. Also,Dr Ferhan Oğuzkan defins child that it is a devolopment period
between babyhood and puberty. And kemal inal makes a definition like that it is a period
which begins on babyhood untill puberty. But when we look a perpective from psychological
and cultural it is a simple definition.Because childhood is not only a natural situation but also
it is a social situation.
WHAT IS LITERATURE?
Literature: written material such as poetry, novels, essays, etc, works of imagination characte
rized by excellence of style and expressionand by themes of general or enduring interest
Okay. All of you have some information about child and literature. So let's talk about the main
point.Do you know
CHILDREN’S LITERATURE, the body of written works and accompanying illustrations
produced in order to entertain or instruct young people. The genre encompasses a wide range
of works, including acknowledged classics of world literature, picture books and easy-to-read
stories written exclusively for children, and fairy tales, lullabies, fables, folk songs, and other
primarily orally transmitted materials.
Here is a definition part which taken from
britanica.(http://global.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/111289/childrens-literature)
And there are some basic themes which is included in child literature :
these are:
 home
 school
 parents
 siblings
 grandparents
 friendship
 toys, dolls, play
 pets and animals
 birthdays
 holidays
 friendship
 magic
 the imagination
There are some point of view to child and that progres is like that. Also Temple summaries
this progres like that.So this is the style of behaviour of people to children.
1-They neclected.
2-They suspected that children have a huge evil .
3-They thought that the need a moral education and ideal examples.
4-They accepted the children as they were. And they presented a good literature.
Firstly when we look at the period which children were neglected.we can summary this
siteation like that.500 years ago childhood was not available in western society. Therefore, we
can mention about child literature. And what happened in that 500 years. And what is the
importance of the children.what do they speak ,read, and listen.
For finding all these questions we should analyse the history progress of archaic age.Because
this period is the first heritage of modern concept of childhood consideration .
Ideas of Neil Posman And Importance of Childhood In Greeks
Neil Postman mention about childhood his literary work (annihilation of childhood). There is
no childhood concept in ancient greece. The words which they used was unclear.
On the other hand children was classified with the animals, women and slaves.
Who wants to a be child in that century?Nobody? is not it..
Although it is common to leave childeren ,the greeks attach importance to education. As is
well known, athenians built up many education places for spreading greek culture.
CHILDHOOD IN ROMANS
The Romans also adulthood and childhood an important factor in differentiating between
periods, the 'idea of shame at adding 'childhood' they give a new perspective to the concept
Postman also, in addition to education 'shame notion is a very important step in the
development of the concept of childhood is to say: "Good thoughts without shame improved
childhood can not exist.
-----Let’s turn back literature!!-------LITERATURE BY ORAL----
In ancient times, the children are fed from the mind of the adult literature: "The oldest type
cultures were oral culture where there is no tell everyone the story of adults and children had
to be content with.
In these times of printed books were apsent. There were story tellers.
Stories were told by storytellers and community traditions and values was transmitted from
one generation . Stories passed down orally . So that creating a distinction between childhood
and adulthood that there is an educational and social literacy in the Middle Ages, children
understand everything adults say.
LIKE AN ADULT---
When they could tell exactly they became dominant passed from childhood to adulthood. But
children begin to talk in a good way When they were seven years old. From the age of seven
children could understand and tell so what can be said by adults .
WORK---
As Temple stated "After seven years, children would start to work in kitchens,
field or in the shops.
CLOTHES,MEALS ETC-----
The child lived with adults nested. The child was an example of aldult miniatur. adults and
children are wearing the same clothes, eating the same food, they were playing same
games. They were amintaining their lives with the adults without any difference.
DRINK-LANGUAGE---
Children drink alcoholic beverages and cigarettes, and would use vulgar language(SLANG)
IMPORTANCE IN SOCIETY---
Childeren were not included testament to the end of the 14th century because they thougt that
the child would not live too long.
Briefly, the idea of childhood in the Middle Ages there were nothing specific to childhood
such as games jargon literature.so we can understand how they pay attention to the child.
"Children in ancient times as they have to do with(content oneself) the stories that interest of
adults. These are such as epic story Beowulf. This goes on until the 16.century.
With The Printing Press
With the development of industry and economy has brought a new perspective on children's
literature. The main reason for this is that the printing press was invented and also rediscovery
of education. From this time everybody can reach books because of printing press. As
increasing the literacy of society began a distinction between childhood and adulthood. In the
ancient times only there was a oral literature with the invention of the printing press replaced
written literature.
Opening Schools
Wherever literacy inreasing opened new school with the printing press. And the mentalith of
childhood develped rapidly. The development of school was an important factor to formation
different world of childhood.

known of those books.
Receipt Of Books
Before the printing press children live and work with adult, they listen and reading together
and children didnt realize the shame and privacy. So this naturel behaviours of children was
alarmed the church. And they thought the education is the most effective solutin. The books
which were printed not funny and appeal to children request. On the other hand books were
printed for teaching literacy.
Church Pespective On Children
The children in this period was known as harboring evil in them young bodies. So church
thought the books of children should contain some parts of from Bible.
Ideas Of Locke For Children
Even if children sometimes tend to chapbooks which involve adult literature they are
controlled the books that contain religious and educational childbooks. John Locke is the
person who opposes the ideas of church which is releated to child.
Locke think that the children born like a blank slate. You can remember from the cultural
antropology lesson last year. Also he opposed the idea of church also these were huge
development in children literature.
19.Century
The church effects increased in the begining of the 19. c.The child literature revives and ı
becomes a central point.
