The shining opening sequence analysis
1.
2. The first analysis is about the film the
Shining. This is a horror/thriller film
that was made in 1980 and
directed by Stanley Kubrick and
based on the novel written by
Stephen King. The plot to this film is
that a family heads to an isolated
hotel for winter and the dad is
influenced into violence by an
evil/spiritual presence whilst his
psychic son sees horrific
forebodings from the past and
future. I would say that the target
audience for this film is both male
and female aged 18-25 as the film
has a certificate of MA (mature
adult) and is aimed an audiences
that enjoy films that include
violence (horror) and mystery.
3.
In the opening sequence, no characters are introduced. We are
only shown a car driving through an isolated area, along side a
mountain, to reach there final destination which will also most
probably be isolated or abandoned. There are titles during the
opening sequence, which enable to directors, producers, writers
and some actors/actresses to have recognition. The opening
sequence was able to set the narrative due to the constant
establishing shot that was used and set the storyline for the
audience and film and was accompanied by an eerie
soundtrack which added suspense and created a feel of
danger and fear. The shot that was used also allowed us to see
the setting, i.e. a dark forest, which could be classed as a
stereotypical setting and a convention of a thriller/horror genre.
The trees either side of the road creates shadows which gives a
dark/creepy feel, which also allow the audience to conclude
that the genre for the film is an thriller/horror.
