2. Introduction
Bands that are starting out usually use Myspace, Facebook
Twitter, YouTube & sometimes if they have enough money
they have a personal website.
In this presentation there are examples of what each social
networking website is and how it is used when it comes to
promoting artists.
3. Myspace
Myspace profiles for musicians in the website's Myspace Music section differ from normal
profiles in allowing artists to upload their entire discographies consisting of MP3 songs.
The uploader must have rights to use the songs (e.g. their own work, permission
granted, etc.). Unsigned musicians can use Myspace to post and sell music using
SNOCAP, which has proven popular among Myspace users.
Shortly after Myspace was sold to Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox News and 20th
Century Fox, in 2005, they launched their own record label, MySpace Records, in an effort
to discover unknown talent currently on MyspaceMusic.Regardless of the artist already
being famous or still looking for a break into the industry, artists can upload their songs
onto Myspace and have access to millions of people on a daily basis. Some well known
singers such as Lily Allen and Sean Kingston gained fame through Myspace. The
availability of music on this website continues to develop, largely driven by young talent.
Over eight million artists have been discovered by Myspace and many more continue to
be discovered daily.[81] In late 2007, the site launched The Myspace Transmissions, a series
of live-in-studio recordings by well-known artists.
4. Myspace
Myspace, in 2008, redesigned its music page adding new features
for all musicians. These new features include the users' ability to
create playlists, resembling the functions of Last.fm and other
social music websites, along with the popular ProjectPlaylist that
is popular on profiles. The new music features also archive songs
from many popular artists, resembling the services of iTunes and
Napster. In March 2010, listening to the full song in the search
results has been disable and had been replaced by 30 second
samples. Myspace music also suggests songs based on the songs
you are currently listening to or the songs you had added to the
playlist, making it as a music discovery tool.
5. Facebook
Facebook is a social networking service and Web site launched in February
2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. As of July
2011, Facebook has more than 800 million active users. Users must register
before using the site, after which they may create a personal profile, add
other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic
notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join
common-interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or
other characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as "People
From Work" or "Close Friends". The name of the service stems from the
colloquial name for the book given to students at the start of the academic
year by some university administrations in the United States to help students
get
6. Twitter
Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send
and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, informally known as "tweets".
Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched that July. Twitter rapidly gained
worldwide popularity, with over 300 million users as of 2011, generating over 300 million tweets
and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day. It is sometimes described as "the SMS of the
Internet.”
Twitter Inc., the company that operates the service and associated website, is based in San
Francisco, with additional servers and offices in San Antonio, Boston, and New York City.
Twitter's origins lie in a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board members of the
podcasting company Odeo. Dorsey introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to
communicate with a small group.[11] The original project code name for the service was twttr, an
idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass,[12] inspired by Flickr and the five-character
length of American SMS short codes.
7. YouTube
YouTube is a video-sharing website, created by three former PayPal employees in
February 2005, on which users can upload, view and share videos.[3]
The company is based in San Bruno, California, and uses Adobe Flash Video and
HTML5 technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video
content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content
such as video blogging and short original videos. Most of the content on YouTube has
been uploaded by individuals, although media corporations including
CBS, BBC, VEVO, Hulu, and other organizations offer some of their material via the
site, as part of the YouTube partnership program.
Unregistered users may watch videos, and registered users may upload an unlimited
number of videos. Videos that are considered to contain potentially offensive content
are available only to registered users 18 years old and older.
In November 2006, YouTube, LLC was bought by Google Inc. for US$1.65 billion, and
now operates as a subsidiary of Google.
9. Introduction
I have decided to do my case study on the brand new band
called Encore. They are three London lads who are very
talented and have a free mixtape available for download
on their official website at www.wantmoreencore.co.uk.

created myself) of

There are many features on the Myspace page which only bands/artists get
on their special page, some of these are shown on this page.

12. Facebook
I think that Facebook is brilliant way for artists to connect
with their fans, see what they’re saying about them and
also get comments on their Facebook wall about their
past shows, latest news and lots more!
Fans can post pictures of the band by posting it on the
bands wall, where the band can see and comment on it.
The artist can post pictures, videos, status’ and lots more
with the added tabs that can be created and put under the
profile picture (shown on next slide)

14. Twitter
Twitter is a fantastic tool to get the word out about new
artists, especially if they have just played a gig- They can tell
everyone to go to Twitter to find more information about gigs
or just if they want to talk to them!
Encore have several Twitter pages. One which they all use
(pictured on next slide) and they also each have an individual
personal one so they can still tweet when they are not
working or if they are doing something individually away
from work.
As a fan, you can tweet bands when they post on Twitter and
if you’re lucky enough, you might get a reply. However big
artists such as The Wanted, JLS etc don’t usually tweet back
unless you are extra lucky.

16. You Tube
YouTube is a great way to advertise your band with their
new tracks. It allows you to subscribe to the band and the
videos you upload , contact the band by commenting on
their pages and also watch all their videos they have ever
posted.
Justin Bieber was found on YouTube at the age of 14 with
thanks to his mum posting videos of him to show their
relatives that lived far away, however a recording
company found the videos because he got thousands of
views on them. He soon got signed and moved to LA.
