2. Wilbur Wright was born in 1867 in Millville in the state of Indiana, and his brother Orville in 1871 in Dayton, Ohio. They were the sons of protestant clergyman. Both boys received secondary education, but none obtained a diploma of completion of the school.
3. The brothers had a talent for tinkering and both were interested in human capacity to fly. In 1892 they opened the Wright Cycle Company, which sold, repaired and constructed cycles. In 1899 Orville and Wilbur began working alone on a plane.
4. Wright Brothers originally built gliders, controlled by turning of a part of wings. In 1900, in order to continue the experiments, they moved to Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, as the area was suitable for testing because of strong winds. On 23rd March 1903 they applied for a patent (granted on 22nd May 1906) in their own way to control flying machines, obtained with the financial assistance of Alexander Graham Bell. In 1903 they also built their first aeroplane - Wright Flyer, fueled by an internal combustion engine built by their employee Charlie Taylor.
5. success On 14th December 1903 Wilbur Wright made his first attempt to fly from the hills, at the distance of 36 meters. It was not very successful and ended with a little aircraft damage. The next attempts took place on 17th December 1903. On this day, at about 10.35, Orville Wright flew into the air in the aeroplane at a distance of 39 meters (120 feet) lasting for 12 seconds. In the fourth flight of the day, Wilbur Wright flew 279 meters in 59 seconds. The first flight of an aircraft is generally considered to be the first flight of Wright.
7. The success of Wright brothers came from: * careful study of aerodynamics, * the solution of effective control methods, * the use of heavy and not very stable operating engine. It should be noted that the adopted system of the aircraft design was unstable, what created a challenge for the pilot but Wright brothers solved the problem.
8. After attempts in Kitty Hawk brothers Wright returned to Dayton in 1904 and they continued to try flying Huffman Prairie. Because Wright brothers' first aeroplane was too weak to set off without a strong wind, this time they they tried to set off with the help of catapults. At the end of the year Wright brothers managed to fly for 5 minutes. In 1904 and 1905 they carried out more than 80 flights from Huffman Prairie. On 5th October 1905 Wilbur made a flight lasting 39 minutes, covering a distance of 24 1/2 mile. These events were assisted by neighbours and the local press.
9. However, the brothers became famous in the years 1908-1909, when Wilbur demonstrated the aircraft in Europe and Orville presented it to the U.S. Army at Fort Myer. On 14th May 1908 Wright brothers made the first flight with a passenger (it was Charlie Furnas). On 17th September 1908, during the presentation of a military aircraft, there was a disaster because a propeller broke. An Officer Thomas Selfridge died and became the first victim of the air accident. Orville Wright was injured. At the end of 1908 in France, Wilbur Wright took on board of an aircraft the first female passenger - Mrs. Hart O. Berg. On 29th September 1909 Wilbur flew around the Statue of Liberty in New York in the Flyer III aeroplane.
10. Conclusion In 1909 Wright brothers won the first contract to supply an aircraft for the U.S. armed forces. So that, they built an aeroplane capable to fly for an hour with an average speed of 40 miles per hour. Except factories in Dayton, they began the construction of 'Flyer' aircrafts in Germany. Orville Wright died on 30th January 1948 and his brother Wilbur on 30th May 1912. We owe the invention of the aircraft or aircraft machine to them. Without their invention many people could not imagine life today. Thanks to aeroplanes travel is much faster and takes less time.
