Over the last few decades America has become more
cultural diverse. It has welcomed immigrants throughout
different locations and offers job opportunities, education,
and better lives to help people support their families.
Every immigrant has their own story to te$ about their
American Dream.
4. What is immigration?
Immigration is the process of leaving one’s
home country to resettle in a new one. A person
is an immigrant to a country, while an emigrant is
from a country.

Before restrictions were placed on immigration, this was the time period when millions of immigrants set out to come to America. The looked forward to freedoms and new opportunities.They had no place to go so many died off, and the ones who lived quickly realized the hardships they were having of leaving their homeland. From 1820 to 1920 immigrants crowded into factories as new laborers to work and support themselves. Northern and Western immigrants with also some Irish and germans mixed in. Chinese immigrants came around 1850.\n
Anti-immigrant parties felt that immigration threatened american&#x2019;s political structure. They argued with government that immigrants &#x201C;knew nothing&#x201D; about what was going on with the economy, and other important issues, especially voting. Also some Americans thought it was unfair that immigrants were taking jobs and being paid less, which was taking away from themselves. More chinese immigrant began to come to america because of the cheap labor.\n

The chinese exclusion act was brought up by the anti-immigrant parties because this was one way to try to keep them out of America. The act forbidden chinese laborer immigrants to immigrate here. This act was mainly for the ones who worked cheaply, because anti-immigrants thought this was unfair. In 1891 the Bureau of Immigration was created as a follow-up for the exclusion act. It gave the government the permission to deport the immigrants who were illegal and working for cheap labor. Immigration did deflate for a few years after restrictions were put in place. \n
Castle Garden was the first official processing center that immigrants came to by ship. They were processed and went through necessary customs and were allowed into the country.\n
Ellis Island opened up where Castle Garden was. The immigration act of 1924 forces immigration rates to lower and at the time only war refugees were entering through Ellis Island. The Bureau of Immigration processed these immigrants along with millions of others. \n
In 1910, the mexican revolution sent thousands of troops to America for employment. During 1914-1918 when World War I had broke out, many refugees fled to Ellis Island in hopes for better lives. The border patrol was established to keep illegal immigrants out along the mexican coast and still is in effect today.\n
They were air lifted by military cargo ships. They were in search of better lives. The immigration act was re-created stating that only 270,000 immigrants can enter the US per year and there will be no more than 20,000 from one country.&#xA0; This was made so that future immigrants would be welcomed from all over and not only from specific origins. \n
The process of becoming a legal immigrant can take a while and involves a lot of paper work. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service issues the green card. The first step is for the USCIS to review all of the paperwork and approve from the qualifying relative or employer. The second step is to send the approved (if) paperwork to the National Visa Center where the paper work then waits for a visa number to become available. This is where it may take a while because the only way to become legal would be to receive an OK on a visa number. Only a limited number of visa numbers are available each year so it may take some people a long time to complete this process. Once a visa number becomes available, then the third step is for the paper work to be sent to the U.S. embassy or consulate in the foreign citizen&#x2019;s home country. This process can also be very costly and takes patience. Once an immigrant obtains their visa number and has been in the country for 5 years, they can become a naturalized citizen.\n
