The Asmat are an indigenous hunter-gatherer culture living in West Papua, Indonesia, which is located on the western half of the island north of Australia. They are one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer cultures in the world. Traditional Asmat culture places importance on being strong hunters and warriors, and they engage in traditions such as nose piercing and body painting for ceremonies and warfare. However, deforestation, colonization, and forced assimilation are negatively impacting Asmat culture and signaling the end of this traditional way of life.
