Goals Setting Workshop Outline
(Requires two or three #2 pencils with erasers).

Before We Begin:

Scriptures

A – Make a Wishlist
List all the dreams, wishes, wants and desires on Goal Setting Worksheet 1.

Spend at least half an hour listing all the things you need or want to have, be, do and think. Include all the places you want to go, the people you want to have in
your life.

Put down everything you want to be a part of your life.

List anything that comes to you on worksheet 1. Don't worry about how or even whether you're going to get, do or be everything and don't limit yourself.

Just do it.

If you believe someone/anyone might achieve your wish, leave it on. Items like "Have One Million Dollars in the Bank" by such and such a date - are very doable;
millions of people have already done it. On the other hand, if you listed "visit the Andromeda galaxy by the time I'm twenty," you probably crossed the line. Bear in
mind that we can accomplish almost anything we can imagine with God's assistance. One student of goal setting observed, "Anything that the mind can conceive
and believe can be achieved.”

The problem with some goals isn’t the goal itself - it's the deadline assigned to the goal. Or – the thoroughness of the commitment you’ve made to achieve it.
Dreaming, wishing, deciding, committing, doing and sticking to it must ALL happen!

If something seems too fantastic, still write it down, you may edit it later. The point is if you write it down, your mind won't get "stuck" on that one item.

The process of writing out a wish releases it from your brain so you’re free to think of something else. It also engages parts of your brain necessary to evaluate the
goal and ultimately make it happen. Keep writing until you can think of nothing else you want. For some this can be done in minutes; for others hours. You may
even want to spread this step over a day or two.

I’ve personally done this many times and have seen my wishes, desires and goals change and mature.

You will certainly want to do this many times during your life; your wishes will change as you grow, learn, and mature. I prescribe once a year at a bare minimum!

Our goal for this workshop will be to focus on the process of goal setting and achievement rather than on a completing a full round of goal setting. I’ll urge you to
choose one goal to focus on and we’ll work it through all the steps.

If you can learn the entire process for one goal, it’ll transfer to most if not all of your others.

Try and list at least two things you want for each of area of your life including:

    •   Community/Social/Relationships
    •   Health/Physical
    •   Family
    •   Financial
    •   Personal Growth
    •   Spiritual/Mental/Emotional
    •   Vocation

B – Refine Your Wishlist
Select ten of the most interesting goals from Worksheet 1 and copy them to Goal Setting Worksheet 2. If possible, list one goal from each of the seven listed
areas of life.

Now go over each item on the list and estimate when you believe you can achieve it.

In a month, 6 months, one year, 5 years, 10 years? Write your estimate next to each goal. Don't think about it for a long time, just do it quickly.

Review your list and see if you’ve got a balance of short (year or less), intermediate (1 to 5 years), and long-term (5 to 10 years) items. If not, you may want to do
this again later.

Now, give some thought about and answer why you want to achieve each goal you’ve listed.

Rank your list using the number 1 for most valuable and 10 as least valuable. Scan each item on the list and decide which is most important to you. Put a #1 by it.
Then go through every other item and compare each item with your #1

Next, pray over the list and pick out the ten most important items for you in the coming year. Pick the ones you’re most excited about; things you can really see
yourself getting committed to.

You're looking for important things God’s made you passionate about; things that’ll drive you to use your resources to their fullest. Then, for each one, write a
paragraph on why you want to achieve it. Convince yourself of the reasons why you want, because if you can find enough reasons to do something, you can get
yourself to do just about anything. The more challenging the goal, the more important your commitment becomes. You must clearly understand why you want to
achieve them.

Now rank the list and let’s focus on the item that’s most important/valuable to you and use it for the remainder of this exercise.

C- Pick ones You Most Want to Make Goals
Rewrite your top five items in order of importance on Goal Setting Worksheet 3.

Rewrite them using the following guidelines:

    1) Use the personal pronouns I, mine, and me.
    2) State the goal positively (Remove No, Not, Never, etc.).
    3) State each goal in the present tense as if you've already accomplished it.
    4) Use emotion and action words.
    5) Keep your goal statements concise.
    6) Combine similar / complimentary items

Next, answer the following questions for each goal:

    1) When Do I Believe It’s Achievable?
    2) What Area of Life Is It In?
    3) Is It Specific About a Clear Result?
    4) Is It Measurable? – Using What Metric?

    5) Is It Actionable? – Something YOU Can Do?
    6) Is It Realistic – Something Clearly Within The Realm of Possibility?
    7) Is It Timely – Something That Can Be Tackled Now?

D - Pick one goal you’d like to pursue. Preferably one of medium difficulty.
Ask yourself "If I could achieve only one of these items, which would it be?” This may change your #1 choice and if it does, start at the top of the list again and
compare each item with your new #1. Repeat this process for items two through ten. Continue until you are satisfied with top five items.

Write top goal onto the Acid Test Worksheet.

F - List Reasons for Pursuing and Benefits of Achieving
Pass out and do the Reasons and Benefits Worksheet

G - Consider Your Resources
Pass out and Do Resources Worksheet.
Consider Aptitudes Inventory , Spiritual Gifts Inventory

On a scratch sheet of paper or the Resources Worksheet, list or check off the most important resources you’ve got at your disposal to achieve them. Your
aptitudes, spiritual gifts, strengths, skills, education, time, financial resources, friends, core values -- everything you already have going for you is a tool to help you
accomplish what you want.

H – Visualize the Desired Result
Pass out and do the Visualizations Worksheet
Consider About Visualizations

Now, think about the kind of person you must become to achieve all the outcomes you desire.

The very best way to do this is find someone who has already achieved what you want, and model that person. Examine the attitudes, beliefs, character traits,
disciplines, values and behaviors and skills you’ll need to accomplish each of your desired outcomes.

Describe this person in writing. Then review what you've written and ask yourself if this is the kind of person God wants you to be. If it is, then your goal will bring
you joy in the long run. Just knowing that will go a long way toward motivating you every day.


I – Consider Your Inner Voice
Pass out and do the Self-Talk Worksheet
Consider the sample Temple Rebuild Self-Talk Script
Consider the article The Power of Self-Talk

What you say to yourself habitually – defines you. Until you become aware of your inner voice and begin to purposefully direct it – you’ll experience continual
frustration and reduced capacity for goal accomplishment.

Before you become aware of what you say to yourself, you “just do things.” We’re all creatures of habit and habit begins with our thoughts.

Change your thoughts and you change your self-talk. Change your self-talk and you’ll change your habits. Change your habits and you change your results.
Change your results and you change your destiny.


J – Jot Down and Consider Your Challenges
Pass out and do Challenges Worksheet.

Next, look at the Challenges worksheet and write a few paragraphs on the things that prevent you from having what you want right now.

This is very important.

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you’ve got real AND you’ve created artificial limitations for yourself. The best way to overcome them is first to know exactly what
they are.

Think about it.

What’s been holding you back?

    •   Are you a poor planner?
    •   Do you make big plans and then fail to take action on them?
    •   Have you tried to do too many things at one time?
    •   Are you paralyzed by a fear of failure? Fear of success? Fear of the unknown?

Be honest with yourself and really try to understand what limitations have been holding you back. Be acutely aware of and consider your beliefs during this step.
You’re really only trying to discover the current boundaries of your beliefs and develop a manageable set of goals to work on.

This requires soul-searching.

Before getting into the details on the Challenges Test Worksheet, give some thought to and about the goal.




K - Begin your action plans
To the extent you’re able - Determine precisely what it is you need to do every day in order to get where you want to be. Bear in mind though – you RARELY
know exactly what you need to do. What’s important is to get started. A good system will allow you to deal with ideas and help you evaluate them.

The best way to overcome them is first to know exactly what they are. Think about it. What’s been holding you back? • Are you a poor planner? • Do you make big plans and then fail to take action on them? • Have you tried to do too many things at one time? • Are you paralyzed by a fear of failure? Fear of success? Fear of the unknown? Be honest with yourself and really try to understand what limitations have been holding you back. Be acutely aware of and consider your beliefs during this step. You’re really only trying to discover the current boundaries of your beliefs and develop a manageable set of goals to work on. This requires soul-searching.
