3. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I started my journey online in 1996, at the dawn of the Internet. This was around the
time when companies were scrambling at the prospect of the end of the world - well the
digital end that is, called Y2K (tech speak for Year 2000). Many thought that the
Internet would crash, companies would go bust (that one did happen because of another
reason though) and robots would rule the world amid flying cars. Years later, I
reinvented myself and went back to the things I really love, writing and sharing
knowledge. Thus, it was a natural progression for me to combine my previous
background with my passion for writing and knowledge sharing. Today, I am a self
published author, speaker and founder of many sites including www.Bookbyline.com
and www.oumardieng.com
Oumar Dieng, author and
founder of oumardieng.com.

5. INTRODUCTION
The Internet is like the promised land: everything is bigger, better and faster or so we
are told. After nearly 2 decades of surfing the web, building and promoting websites, I
learned a few valuable tips when it comes to self promotion and marketing. Sure,
everything in the digital world has pros and cons but succeeding at it is all a matter of
balance, moderation and consistency. Using a number of tools at your disposal on a
regular basis can go a long way.
If you have written a book or have a service to promote, people will not buy it unless
they know it exists. Unfortunately, most people writers do not have the budget to spend
thousands on advertisement and marketing. After spending hours upon hours to come
up with the best book you can, you must make promoting it a part of the book
publishing process. After all, you are the best representative and spokesperson for your
book since you know it inside and out.
In this eBook, I will cover some simple, common and FREE methods, as well as some
lesser known ones, you can use to promote your book, beyond book signings.

6. CREATE A WEBSITE OR BLOG
There are many advantages to creating a website if you are promoting a book or service.
The biggest benefit of having your own website is content management control. This is
highly crucial if you are particular about how your book is presented to the public and
alongside what other content it is featured. If your book was published by a third party,
they may list it on their website for a time but it would most likely be one of several
books being featured on the publisher's site. You may also be offered a “free” author
page on their main website but again your ability to edit your own content may be
limited at best. For instance, you may not want your autobiography featured next to a
children’s book. In other words, you need to be prepared to share the spotlight with
other authors. There may also be situation where you may want to add additional
content such as interviews, video and audio at will. With a website of your own, you can
do just that with no constraints and have your product on the site as long as you want.
Additionally, you can monetize your website by including content or banner ads related
to your book or your interests in general. “Monetizing” simply means earning money
from advertising displayed throughout your website. You can use content ads, banner
ads, even text ads. A content ad or a text ad is advertisement that can be placed within
the body of an article while banner ads, more popular, are generally placed on top of a
webpage or on the sides of a webpage. Google has one of the most popular tools for
easily displaying ads. It is called Adsense. If you have a Gmail account, go to
http://adsense.google.com to activate your account. You can sign up for free if you do
not have an account. Then you simply need to pick the type of add you would like to
promote on your site, copy and paste the code to your webpage and voila! Google has
some good tutorials on how to do all this.
While having your website is wonderful, it has its drawbacks. First, you would have to
register your domain name, which is the name of your website (example:
www.oumardieng.com). Then you need to find a web host to store your content. In
plain English, this just means that the website you create has to be put on a server
somewhere and the server connects to the internet and “serves” your wonderful content
to the world. The good news is that there are companies that make this easy. They are
called web hosts (or “web hosting”). Most web hosting companies now allow you to
register your domain name and create you website in less than 1 hour. Sure, you still
need to add the content but your site can be up and running in now time!
I have personally used various web hosting companies and recommend these three:
SiteGround, Bluehost and InMotion.
I like SiteGround because of the price and the average response time to resolve an issue
if you have one. BlueHost is known for their unlimited offerings and the price is also

7. good. Finally, InMotion also offers a good price for what you get. Whatever web host
you choose, if price is a factor for you, consider signing up for 6 months or one year to
get the best discount possible.
Another factor to consider, when creating your website, is traffic. For your website to be
found amongst the billions of pages on the Internet, you will need to promote it. Why?
Well, the law of successful websites is quite simple, if no one knows it exists, they won’t
ever see it! It is a waste of your time to create it in the first place if you are not going to
even try to promote it. Unfortunately, listing your website in search engines and
directories may not be enough for people to find your website. The saying: “if you build
it, they will come” just isn’t true anymore. This means that you should be prepared to
not only create the content of your page but also promote it in some way through search
engines, social media and other advertising channels. No worries, you can do most of
this for free!

8. USE SOCIAL MEDIA
Nowadays, any marketing plan that does not involve using social media is flawed. Some
of the most popular social media sites are Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Linkedin,
Pinterest, Myspace, Google Plus. The fact of the matter is that some users spend more
time on social media sites than they do with their own families. Consider this: Facebook
alone has over 1 billion users as of early 2013. Together, these 7 sites reach over 2.2
billion users per month. That’s 2 out of every 7 human beings on the planet!
We love to hate Facebook every once in a while when they seemingly, out of nowhere,
change or add new features and leave us scrambling to find out if our security settings
have been changed. An 8 year old boy, whose parents are friends with a man, helped
reunite the man with his long lost sister after 65 years. How did the 8 year old find the
man’s sister? You guessed it, through Facebook! The point I am trying to make here is
this: Facebook is a social media powerhouse. No other company comes close to the
potential reach it has. So make sure you create a Facebook page as part of your
marketing and promotion strategy. To do so go
to https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php or do a search under Facebook help, in
your account settings. Once you have a Facebook page set up, you can not only engage
with potential fans but with their friends as well. Facebook allows you to use “promoted
posts” (for a low fee) to reach more people. You can also create ads for your book by
using your book cover and some text. This is very inexpensive to do and can be a
valuable tool for a book launch campaign. I’ve used it to raise awareness for my book
project “26 Angels: Words for a Healing Heart.” I was able to get a lot of exposure for
this noble cause for very little money spent on advertisement.
Of course, you do not have to spend a penny to successfully raise awareness on
Facebook. This also applies to Google + (discussed below). The beauty about using
social media is that when you regularly post good content, people will engage with it and
spread the word. When people read something interesting, more often than not, they
want to share it with their friends and family. This is called “engagement”. To engage
users successfully, you need to share something that is interesting rather than just
blasting a message saying “buy my book.” Think of something that is worthy of sharing
or that is interesting. This could be an article, a picture, event a question or a poll.
Research has shown that when you ask your fans a question, you get a higher percentage
of engagement.
If you are just getting started on your Facebook page, start by inviting your friends and
family. Then expend your fan base by posting on Facebook groups in your field of
interest. If you are interested in writing and publishing, join a publishing or writing
group. Then post regularly to those groups to establish yourself as an expert. Be part of
the group; answer questions and participate. Don’t spam! No one likes people who
