How My Family Challenged My Identity
Growing up surrounded by idealized American values and my mother's traditional
Chinese–Vietnamese principles challenged my identity as a first–generation Asian American. I
excelled in school. I pushed myself to join programs such as Paideia, an English course integrated
with history to attain higher levels of critical thinking. Despite being academically independent, my
good grades and interest in English demonstrated how well I understood the language. Cantonese, the
language I used to communicate with my mom, was an entirely different story. Because my mother

As described in "Ways of Reading", narrative content is "a collection of represented events, along
with the participants in those events and the circumstances of those events." (Ways of Reading 260)
and narrative form is "the way in which those events are represented through a particular narrative
medium" (Ways of Reading 260). In other words narrative content is the events that happen
throughout a story and narrative form is the way we are shown these events throughout the story.
There is often a tension between narrative content and narrative form. The difference between the

Content order and form order. Content order is "the chronological order of events" (Ways of
Reading 260), which is the order in which the events really happened. Form order is "the order in
which the narrative presents these events to us" (Ways of Reading 260). In simple narratives the
form order and the content order are usually the same, so the event that we read about first, we
assume that this event was what happened first. Unlike in more complex narratives where there can
be a "manipulation" or "mismatch" in the order of events, which means that the first event we read
about might not be the event that actually occurred first in the story. An example of narrative order
in "The Awakening" is "The two women went one morning to the beach together, arm in arm, under

Today's society has changed so much over time. Growing up as a kid I didn't get to experience
some of the activities kids now get to do. Once you think about it the generation we live in today
is so advanced it doesn't even compare to how it was ten years ago. In my youth age I spent a lot of

in a girls organization. This experience taught me many things. We were actively involved in

I was officially diagnosed with Anxiety this summer, 2016. Since I was little my parents claim
they knew I had it. My parents would tell you my mood swings would be out of control. When
something would go astray my mood would shift. Shift to almost a three year old having a
meltdown. The crying, creaming, hyperventilating, shaking, the world seemed it was ending in
my eyes. Many times if you were to ask me why I was behaving as such I couldn't tell you. Losing

medicating" in a sense. I did a ton of research and I started smoking to help with my anxiety. I
discovered a medicine that helped me.
I found the right amount to smoke to help me daily and I found more of my triggers and how to

My mind can never be quieted. I am constantly thinking of moments or ideas or fantasies. What is

This weeks' review is all about revisions, both large scale and small scale revisions to help us
complete our final essay, the home stretch in this course. I have revised my essay at least ten
times over the past few weeks. Being a professional for the past 20+ years summarizing what is

A group of us candidates were all in perfect formation. For me, it felt like my fate was in the hands
of those who were judging me. We stood in the humid musty gymnasium, our parents, our
siblings, our friends watching, hoping for the best. Other than the few murmurs overheard from
the back room, the building was silent: nobody dared to break it. I remember reflecting back on
all of my hours training in the studio with red and blue foam tiles, one wall covered in mirrors,

Narrative Writing is a story that is told and the order in which it is told. Some stories have
narrators and some without. The narrator is normally a series of characters or one character who tell
the story. Sometimes narrative writing can be classified as fiction writing which is a made up from

Parenting group started two weeks ago, with ten members. The parenting group is taking place in a
classroom. When the members arrived to the classroom the counselor had arranged the chairs in a
circle in the middle of the classroom. When the members arrive they took a seat and waited for the
rest of the members. Members that are part of the parenting group are Dee, Oziel, Nela, Kathy,
Roger, Ozzy, Felix, Susi, Vicente and Miriam. Two of the members are couples that are having a
hard time with a parenting style because they come from different culture and they have different
beliefs and values. The rest of the members are either single parents or married parents.
The first session of parenting group, the counselor opens the first meeting by first introducing herself
