• Sultan as the head of religion
o Developed a system of
administration based on
Islamic Principle.
o Developed and spread Islamic
teaching in Brunei.
o Defended Islam against threat
by other religion.
Sultan Sharif Ali
• The third Sultan of Brunei
• Built the first mosque in
Brunei and introduced the
symbol of Islamic
authority in the royal
emblem
• introduced 4 position of
religious officers; Kadhi,
Khatib, Imam and Mudim
Religious officers
• They are responsible in the administration of
the mosque and enforcement of Syariah Laws
(Hukum Syariah).
• They also functioned as scribes and advisors to
the Sultan.
• Because of their Islamic knowledge and skills in
Arabic the officials often needed to perform
administrative task.
In 1807, Khatib Haji Abdul Latif was sent by Sultan
Ahmad Tajuddin to purchase a ‘Wakaf’ house in the
Holy City of Mekah

Haji Abdul Latif was given
authority by Sultan Abdul
Momin to collect the
revenue from Kampung
Lumapas to Kampung
Sungai Tanjung and from
Sungai Marasan to Sungai

Muhammad Abdul Rahman
were appointed by Sultan
Abdul Momin as witness
during the signing of the
Amanat on 20th February 1885

to become members of
the state council

Religious officers • They are responsible in the administration of the mosque and enforcement of Syariah Laws (Hukum Syariah). • They also functioned as scribes and advisors to the Sultan. • Because of their Islamic knowledge and skills in Arabic the officials often needed to perform administrative task.
