The	next	tipping	point	in	medicine	includes	tapping	into	the	knowledge	
created	by	networks	and	patients.	Patients	are	the	most	underutilized	
resource	in	healthcare.	We've	watched	patients	become	experts	in	their	
conditions—and	we	see	that	their	knowledge	improves	the	care	they	
receive.	With	the	right	tools,	other	patients	can	do	the	same.
We	need	to	look	at	how	to	integrate	communities	into	a	future	healthcare	
system	so	that	we	have	a	mechanism	where	patients	can	learn	from	each	
other.	
Medicine	needs	to	be	more	of	a	team	sport.	The	science	and	the	practice	
of	medicine	are	evolving	so	quickly	that	no	individual	can	keep	up	with	
everything.	Motivated	patients	can	help	each	other	to	get	better	care,	and	
often	can	help	their	doctors	deliver	better	care.

Patient-centered	care	is	not	a	passing	fad;	patients	and	their	families	have	
voices	that	are	increasing	in	volume,	intensity,	and	impact	and	will	
continue	to	grow.	We	have	reached	a	historical	moment	in	healthcare	as	
we	finally	realize	that	patients	and	their	families	are	at	the	center	of	
healthcare,	not	revolving	around	it.
People	had	already	told	me	they	had	lost	their	sense	of	purpose.	We	had	
somehow	lost	our	way	and	our	real	reason	for	being.	But	what	would	
happen	if	we	could	focus	on	the	patient?	If	you	want	to	shift	a	culture,	
it’s	about	how	the	organization	makes	decisions.
While	many	healthcare	workers	espouse	patient-centricity,	their	decision-
making	processes	are	superficial	and	routinely	made	with	flawed	
assumptions	about	what	patients	and	their	families	think,	want,	or	need.	I	
found	that	truly	involving	patients	led	to	organizational	insights	and	
learning	that	benefited	everyone.
Business	is	the	most	powerful	human-made	force	yet	created.	And	in	the	
last	50	to	100	years,	business	has	fallen	short	of	its	potential	to	be	an	
instrument	that	creates	community	wealth	and	health.	Business	to	me	is	a	
tool.	It	happens	to	be	a	very	powerful	tool.
What	is	inspiring	to	me	about	the	B	Corp	Movement	is	that	people	are	
consciously	using	business	as	a	tool	to	build	a	bridge	to	a	more	shared	
prosperity	for	everyone—not	just	for	the	few	that	control	the	shares.
By	adopting	a	wholeness-oriented	way	of	thinking,	we	have	more	
interdependence,	integration,	and	a	more	holistic	approach	to	the	role	of	
business	in	society.	That	has	reflected	in	the	B	Corp	community	itself.

Humanity	is	being	called	to	grow	up,	take	on	its	fears,	and	exercise	
responsibility.	This	can	be	an	anxiety-producing	transition	for	
individuals,	and	it	is	a	powerfully	anxiety-producing	transition	for	
humanity	as	a	whole,	as	social	responsibility	becomes	very	personal	
and	ties	us	all	to	the	outcome	of	our	collective	actions.	It’s	no	longer	
something	that	someone	else	must	do.	We	are	all	in	it	together.
I	didn't	know	there	was	such	a	thing	as	a	movement	called	Working	Out	
Loud—I	just	did	it.	For	me,	social	media	is	a	way	to	connect	with	other	
people	and	build	community.	It's	brought	me	great	richness	to	see	how	
we	can	make	connections	with	people	anywhere	in	the	world.
It	would	be	great	if	people	could	tap	into	their	creativity	and	use	it	to	
build	their	community.	We	need	to	tap	into	our	intuition	and	creativity.	
We	need	to	open	our	eyes	and	see	what	we	can	actually	do.	Chance	favors

I'm	an	innovator.	I	develop	products	and	connect	with	people,	where	we	do	
a	bit	of	co-creation	and	co-production,	whether	that	be	on	blogs	or	other	
projects.	My	background	is	in	health,	but	what	I	find	with	being	online	is	
that	you	can	connect	across	a	whole	range	of	industries,	and	it	gives	you	
access	to	people	who	you	would	never	have	met	in	your	day-to-day	life.
What	many	people	are	not	aware	of	is	that	whatever	product	you	apply	
on	your	skin	goes	inside	your	body	as	well.	What	this	means	for	us	is	that	
you	have	to	be	able	to	eat	what	you	apply	on	your	skin.	You	need	to	know	
what	ingredients	and	chemicals	you	are	ingesting.	You	need	to	take	care	of	
your	whole	body.
It	is	so	liberating	to	feel	that	you	have	finally	found	your	voice.	Integrating	
my	voice	into	a	product	can	sometimes	become	messy.	It	has	been	one	of	
the	hardest	external	exercises	for	me	so	far.	I	never	appreciated	how	
tough	it	is	when	you	simply	want	it	to	be	an	extension	of	your	
authenticity.	And	then	you	realize	that	the	best	teacher	is	life.

Tiossan	is	a	wellbeing	brand	as	modeled	by	the	African	people,	and	
especially	the	Senegalese	people.	In	our	country	and	culture,	
wellbeing	is	about	having	great	skin.	It’s	the	skin	you	live	in,	and	at	
the	most	physical	level,	it	needs	to	be	healthy.	It’s	about	feeling	
good	in	your	own	skin.
To	work	in	new	ways,	we	need	to	understand	partnership.	We	need	to	not	
only	have	a	slogan,	but	truly	internalize	that	we	are	all	in	it	together.	In	
the	past,	when	we	worked	with	the	outside	it	was	mostly	with	a	vendor	in	
a	one-sided	relationship.	Today,	it’s	about	looking	at	how	we	can	both	win	
and	create	something	together	that	is	new	and	different	and	that	the	
world	needs.
If	you	get	clear	on	and	share	your	values	and	the	behavior	needed	to	
innovate,	you	will	unleash	talent	both	inside	and	outside	of	your	
organization	to	deliver	remarkable	shifts,	changes,	and	relevant	products	
both	for	today	and	tomorrow.	As	more	people	feel	connected	to	the	shared	
purpose	of	the	organization,	you	can	implement	new	ways	of	working

I	am	all	about	helping	people	figure	out	a	new	way	of	working	in	the	
world—whether	the	new	way	is	for	an	individual,	a	process,	a	function,	a	
division,	or	even	an	ecosystem.	The	world	is	changing	quickly,	from	both	a	
technological	and	a	connectivity	perspective.	If	you	are	not	evolving	and	
adapting	quickly,	you	will	not	be	able	to	do	what	is	required	to	create	the	
impact,	contribution,	and	value	that	you	want	to	make	in	the	world.
We	have	an	opportunity	to	come	together	and	shift	from	a	world	that	
focuses	so	narrowly	on	transactions	to	a	wider	world	that	recognizes	the	
power	of	relationships.	Leaders	need	to	see	the	beauty	of	connecting	
people	and	introduce	new	ways	of	working	that	allow	us	to	focus	more	on	
key	projects	and	purpose,	instead	of	being	bogged	down	in	organizational	
charts.	I	want	to	find	the	way	to	help	the	c-suite	see	that,	and	help	them	
adopt	greater	purpose

I	could	no	longer	sit	back	and	watch	what	was	going	on	around	me.	I	
started	exploring	opportunities.	I	started	to	think	about	how	I	could	make	
a	difference.	While	the	company	was	mostly	comprised	of	scientists	and	
researchers,	I	started	to	think	of	unique	ways	my	capabilities	could	
complement	their	work	and	add	value.	I	knew	that	it	was	up	to	me	to	
create	a	path	and	not	to	wait	for	someone	else	to	pave	it	for	me.
The	biggest	impact	we	had	was	in	connecting	people	with	others	and	with	
information	outside	of	the	organization.	People	who	would	otherwise	
never	know	each	other	could	now	collaborate	because	they	were	
interested	in	what	we	were	doing.	We	worked	as	a	community,	gathering	
people	across	silos	through	shared	purpose.
Ultimately,	for	a	lot	of	this	change	to	happen,	we	have	to	start	looking	
within	ourselves.	It’s	counter	to	how	most	of	us	were	raised.	We	have	to	
do	this	inner	work	to	learn	the	way	to	be	in	business	in	the	21st century.	
We	need	to	know	who	we	are	as	individuals	and	who	we	are	as	
organizations.
We	may	think	these	ideas	are	new,	but	they	are	very	old.	To	be	most	
effective	in	the	world,	we	first	need	to	evolve	within	ourselves.	The	idea	of	
overcoming	the	forces	that	could	be	making	us	less	effective	is	what	we're	
trying	to	work	with,	so	that	we	can	then	act	in	the	world	in	a	more	positive	
way.

I	look	at	life	from	a	holistic	perspective.	The	challenge	we	need	to	
overcome	is	finding	out	how	we	can	integrate	business	as	part	of	our	
lives.	It	requires	transformation	in	how	we	think,	how	we	behave,	and	
how	we	act.	We	are	seeing	it	today	with	younger	generations,	yet	we	are	
still	training	and	expecting	them	to	live	in	a	world	of	competition	and	
overachieving.
Based	on	over	10	years	of	experience	in	Tibet,	One	Heart	World-Wide	
developed	an	internationally	recognized	model—the	Network	of	Safety—
which	is	a	simple	yet	effective	healthcare	model	that	has	been	shown	to	
reliably	reduce	preventable	maternal	and	newborn	deaths	in	remote,	rural	
areas	of	the	world.	We	implemented	it	across	mainland	China,	Latin	
America,	and	West	Africa,	and	have	proven	it	to	be	a	replicable	and	
sustainable	approach	to	improving	maternal	and	neonatal	health.

People	often	ask	us	how	we	did	it.	It’s	simple:	we	went	to	the	people,	we	
lived	with	them,	and	we	loved	them.	And	we	helped	them	to	come	up	
with	ways	to	address	their	problems,	because	there’s	no	one	in	the	world	
who	wants	their	mother,	daughter,	or	sister	to	die	in	childbirth.	When	we	
were	asked	how	we	made	it	sustainable,	I’d	share	that	not	losing	a	
community	or	family	member	was	a	pretty	highly	motivating	factor.
My	dream	is	for	all	women	worldwide	to	have	access	to	a	safe	delivery.	It	
is	not	acceptable	to	me	that	any	woman	has	to	die	while	giving	birth.	Our	
work	is	ongoing,	and	we	are	always	looking	for	further	support	to	help	
save	more	mothers	and	their	babies.
