- 2. PANIC DISORDER • Panic disorder is a severe form of anxiety disorder. While anxiety disorder may cause you to feel nervous or anxious about certain activities or situations, panic disorder is an extreme reaction to perceived danger. In many cases, the danger you sense is not real and your fear is unwarranted. Panic disorder may cause you to shy away from daily activities because of the fear of having panic attacks.
- 3. PANIC DISORDER • A panic attack is a rapid activation of the sympathetic nervous system, the branch of the autonomic nervous system that induces the “fight or flight” response. In dangerous situations, this is your autonomic nervous system doing its job, alerting you to help you survive.
- 4. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A PANIC ATTACK: • Shortness of breath or hyperventilation • Sweating • Nausea or upset stomach • Feeling dizzy, light-headed, or faint • Numbness or tingling sensations • Hot or cold flashes • Fear of dying, losing control, or going crazy • Heart palpitations or a racing heart • Chest pain or discomfort • Trembling or shaking • Choking feeling • Feeling unreal or detached from your surroundings
- 5. PANIC DISORDER • To ease a panic attack, or to prevent one from getting worse, breathe as slowly and as deeply as you can. Really focus on your breathing. Learning and using relaxation techniques may help with a panic disorder. Many people find that deep breathing exercises are useful. This means taking a long, slow breath in, and very slowly breathing out. If you do this a few times, and concentrate fully on breathing, you may find it quite relaxing.
