1. Description of the students
At Thai Nguyen University of Education, English has been taught on the credit-based
system. English is divided into three units of study: unit one and two are for General English
(GE), unit three for English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In the same GE class, there are
students from different faculties, learning different majors. They can be first, second, or third
year students. However, they do not differ in terms of their English proficiency level. The
size of a class ranges from 30 to 70 members. Only in an ESP class, the students are from the
same major. A student has to take the three units respectively; the two GE units must be done
before the ESP one. For GE, students have three lessons on the same day every week. For
ESP, they meet twice a week, two lessons at a time.
The students in this project are GE students at Thai Nguyen University of Education.
They are required to learn English using the textbook New Cutting Edge. They are all at pre-
intermediate level although they come from different falculties.
Each module in New Cutting Edge is divided into 7 to 9 periods, 50 minutes for each.
This lesson plan is designed for the first four periods of module 1. (The lesson titles,
objectives and duration is given clearly in each lesson plan).
