asked His disciples “who do the people say that I am?”
And they said, “some say you are John the Baptist, others say
Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Jesus said to them “Who do YOU say that I am?”
Simon Peter replied “You are the Christ, son of the living God.”
And Jesus answered and said “Blessed are you Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my
Father who is in heaven … and on this rock I will build my
church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in
one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a
mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they
were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them
and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with
the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit
gave them utterance.

• In Caesarea Peter had the knowledge but not the power of
the Holy Spirit when he identified Jesus as “the Son of the
Living God”
• The Day of Pentecost formally launched the New
Testament Church, uniting the moment of salvation with
the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
• All believers share the reality of being baptized by the Spirit
• It makes believers part of the body of Christ, the Church
• The moment you pray to receive Christ is the same moment
you are baptized by the Spirit

• Baptism of the Holy Spirit – an anointing into the body of Christ
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members
of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one
Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free
and all were made to drink of one Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:13

happens once and for all the moment we are saved
• Every believer is indwelt with the HS, but not
necessarily FILLED with the HS
• Indwelt with the HS is from God, filled with the HS is
God’s commandment but our decision

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
And He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God
with ALL your heart and with ALL your soul and ALL
your mind. This is the great and first commandment!
And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as
yourself. On these two commandments depend all the
Law and the Prophets.”

Romans 7:15-20
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I
want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not
want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer
I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that nothing
good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to
do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not
do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on
doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do
it, but sin that dwells in me.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires
of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit,
and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are
opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you
want to do…
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such
things there is no law

• Counsels, guides and directs us
• Interprets Scripture for us
• Exalts Jesus in our hearts & minds
• Compels us to worship
• Empowers us for witness
• Produces fruit

• Are any of us truly living a life desperate for God??
• Is it even possible to live a life desperate for God in the USA with
so many creature comforts?
• What changes would you have to make in your life to truly begin
living a life desperate for God?
• What changes would God have to make in your life to turn your
life into a life desperate for Him?
• Do we even want Him to make the changes necessary to drive us
desperately to Him?
• Do we TRUST God enough to genuinely pray the prayer of
desperation??
• Truth is, haven’t we become numb to God’s call on our lives??

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin
which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the
race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder
and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set
before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is
seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-2
