                         GUIDELINES FOR PROPOSALS
                     LOCAL KNOWLEDGE and PEACEBUILDING
                                 2012 –2013

Proposal Considerations

The United Board invites proposals in (1) Local Knowledge and (2) Interreligious
Understanding and Peacebuilding for the July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013 fiscal year. Proposals
should be submitted by October 31, 2011. Proposals should be emailed to
grants@unitedboard.org. Decisions regarding proposal funding will be announced by June
30, 2012.

(1) Local Knowledge and Undergraduate Teaching and Learning:
Proposals should explain the significance of the local knowledge that will be collected and
how it will be collected, organized and used in teaching and learning. Projects may be
interdisciplinary or may be in any area of the arts, humanities, social sciences or natural
sciences.

Proposals should meet at least one of these criteria:

   Create models that integrate local knowledge in undergraduate curricula.

   Involve undergraduate students as active participants in the collection, organization,
   analysis and/or sharing of data.

   Expand the capacity of an institution’s faculty and/or library staff in the uses of local
   knowledge for teaching, learning, student research and/or service.

   Emphasize collaboration in the collection and/or use of local knowledge data (e.g., among
   classes, across departments, among the institution and community, or among higher
   education institutions in one country or internationally).

Local Knowledge grants do not support the digitization of archives or other collections,
faculty research or the cost of bandwidth, electricity, or servers. Project organizers are
encouraged to use available equipment. Hardware and software costs, if any, should be
minimal and should account for no more than 15% of the proposed budget.


(2) Interreligious Understanding and Peacebuilding
Projects in the areas of interreligious understanding, peacebuilding, peace studies and conflict
transformation will be considered. We are particularly interested in proposals that foster
collaboration with other institutions, engage local communities and promote experiential
and/or service learning. Projects may be in any academic discipline or be interdisciplinary.

Background
Throughout Asia and across the globe, tensions and even violent conflicts arising from
religious, ethnic, economic, competition for resources and political difference have been
increasing in number, scope and severity. Higher education institutions can be effective agents
of peace, particularly through programs that train faculty and students and that engage local
communities through service and experiential learning.

Proposal details
Priority will be given to proposals that meet at least one of these criteria:

   Develop effective undergraduate curriculum in peacebuilding, interreligious understanding
   and/or peace studies that addresses both broad theoretical and local, practical issues and
   approaches to promoting peace.

   Engage/benefit local communities while promoting effective training of students through
   service-learning and experiential learning.

   Integrate interreligious understanding and peacebuilding with core curriculum.

   Design innovative and sustainable models for training faculty and students (both short-
   and long-term).

   Emphasize collaboration (in one of the above-named fields) within and beyond the
   institution, across departments, between institution and community or among higher
   education institutions in one country or internationally.

General Guidelines

Proposals should explain how the proposed program meets the proposing institution’s own
priorities. For example, how will the project/program’s activities contribute to a stronger
faculty or better leadership in your university? For a single-institution proposal, please
indicate if the leadership or administration of the institution is fully committed to the project
with support of funding, time, personnel or other resources. For multi-institutional proposals,
please make sure that the division of responsibilities and the leadership structure are clearly
stated, and all institutions are committed to the project and their roles in it. Also, for
projects/programs that extend beyond the proposing institution, please describe how the
proposing institution is the best institution to implement the project/program. To demonstrate
your school’s commitment to your proposal, please indicate the amount your school is
spending from other sources for the project/program for which you are requesting United
Board support.

What We Don’t Support

1.        Requests from individuals (without institutional endorsement)
2.        Requests from a non-Asian institution not in collaboration with our Asian partner(s)
3.        Church or relief work or community outreach that has no relation to higher education
4.        Student scholarships (except for designated grants)
5.        Requests for funding to turn thesis/dissertation into research publications
6.        Requests for attending or sponsoring conferences
7.        Buildings and building maintenance (except for designated grants)
8.        Salaries or salary supplement (except for designated grants)
9.        Equipment and furniture (except for local knowledge or designated grants)

Format for Proposal

     1. Executive Summary (separate page for each project, not to exceed one page)

          Assessment (to be filled by UB staff)
     2. Contact person and contact information (address, telephone, fax, e-mail).
     3. Background and rationale.
     4. Goals and objectives, including expected outcomes.
     5. Description of participant(s) and intended activities.

     6. Stages of project and time frame; process to be used for evaluation at each stage.
     7. Provision for continuity of program after the grant is depleted.
     8.   Detailed itemized budget. Use reasonable estimates and do not include items
pertaining to buildings, furniture, equipment, salaries, overhead, miscellaneous or
   contingency costs. Indicate conversion rate and whether the budget is in local
   currency or in US dollars.

9. Components of project and amounts of support requested from United Board.
10. Other source(s) of funding that have been obtained or are being sought.

UNITED BOARD FOR CHRISTIAN HIGHER EDUCATION IN ASIA New York office: Hong Kong Office: 475 Riverside Drive, Room 1221 1/F, Chung Chi College New York, New York 10115, USA Administration Building, Telephone: (212) 870-2600 The Chinese University of Hong Kong Fax: (212) 870-2322 Shatin, N.T., HK e-mail: grants@unitedboard.org e-mail: grants@unitedboard.org GUIDELINES FOR PROPOSALS LOCAL KNOWLEDGE and PEACEBUILDING 2012 –2013 Proposal Considerations The United Board invites proposals in (1) Local Knowledge and (2) Interreligious Understanding and Peacebuilding for the July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013 fiscal year. Proposals should be submitted by October 31, 2011. Proposals should be emailed to grants@unitedboard.org. Decisions regarding proposal funding will be announced by June 30, 2012. (1) Local Knowledge and Undergraduate Teaching and Learning: Proposals should explain the significance of the local knowledge that will be collected and how it will be collected, organized and used in teaching and learning. Projects may be interdisciplinary or may be in any area of the arts, humanities, social sciences or natural sciences. Proposals should meet at least one of these criteria: Create models that integrate local knowledge in undergraduate curricula. Involve undergraduate students as active participants in the collection, organization, analysis and/or sharing of data. Expand the capacity of an institution’s faculty and/or library staff in the uses of local knowledge for teaching, learning, student research and/or service. Emphasize collaboration in the collection and/or use of local knowledge data (e.g., among classes, across departments, among the institution and community, or among higher education institutions in one country or internationally). Local Knowledge grants do not support the digitization of archives or other collections, faculty research or the cost of bandwidth, electricity, or servers. Project organizers are
  • 2. encouraged to use available equipment. Hardware and software costs, if any, should be minimal and should account for no more than 15% of the proposed budget. (2) Interreligious Understanding and Peacebuilding Projects in the areas of interreligious understanding, peacebuilding, peace studies and conflict transformation will be considered. We are particularly interested in proposals that foster collaboration with other institutions, engage local communities and promote experiential and/or service learning. Projects may be in any academic discipline or be interdisciplinary. Background Throughout Asia and across the globe, tensions and even violent conflicts arising from religious, ethnic, economic, competition for resources and political difference have been increasing in number, scope and severity. Higher education institutions can be effective agents of peace, particularly through programs that train faculty and students and that engage local communities through service and experiential learning. Proposal details Priority will be given to proposals that meet at least one of these criteria: Develop effective undergraduate curriculum in peacebuilding, interreligious understanding and/or peace studies that addresses both broad theoretical and local, practical issues and approaches to promoting peace. Engage/benefit local communities while promoting effective training of students through service-learning and experiential learning. Integrate interreligious understanding and peacebuilding with core curriculum. Design innovative and sustainable models for training faculty and students (both short- and long-term). Emphasize collaboration (in one of the above-named fields) within and beyond the institution, across departments, between institution and community or among higher education institutions in one country or internationally. Questions should be directed to aboretz@unitedboard.com General Guidelines Proposals should explain how the proposed program meets the proposing institution’s own priorities. For example, how will the project/program’s activities contribute to a stronger faculty or better leadership in your university? For a single-institution proposal, please indicate if the leadership or administration of the institution is fully committed to the project with support of funding, time, personnel or other resources. For multi-institutional proposals,
  • 3. please make sure that the division of responsibilities and the leadership structure are clearly stated, and all institutions are committed to the project and their roles in it. Also, for projects/programs that extend beyond the proposing institution, please describe how the proposing institution is the best institution to implement the project/program. To demonstrate your school’s commitment to your proposal, please indicate the amount your school is spending from other sources for the project/program for which you are requesting United Board support. What We Don’t Support 1. Requests from individuals (without institutional endorsement) 2. Requests from a non-Asian institution not in collaboration with our Asian partner(s) 3. Church or relief work or community outreach that has no relation to higher education 4. Student scholarships (except for designated grants) 5. Requests for funding to turn thesis/dissertation into research publications 6. Requests for attending or sponsoring conferences 7. Buildings and building maintenance (except for designated grants) 8. Salaries or salary supplement (except for designated grants) 9. Equipment and furniture (except for local knowledge or designated grants) Format for Proposal 1.
