What is it made up of?
Four different
layers
Crust
Mantle
Outer Core
Inner Core
3. +
The Crust
The part we live on
Thin like the skin of an apple
3-5 miles thick under the
oceans crust and 25 miles
thick under the continents.
Temperatures vary from air
temperature to 1600
degrees.
The crust is in pieces called
plates.
These move along on top
of the mantle.
Sometimes they cause
earthquakes!
4. +
What is the Crust made of?
Continental
crust
made of Granite Granite
Oceanic crust made of
volcanic lava rock
called basalt
Basalt
The crust and the
upper layer of the
mantle make a zone of
brittle rock called the
Lithosphere.
5. +
Tectonic Plates
Slabs of rock made out of
the continental and oceanic
crusts
Pacific and Antarctic Plates
are the largest
Like icebergs only the tops
of them are seen
They slowly bump into one
another like bumper cars
At their boundaries
earthquake and volcanic
activity occur
6. +
The Mantle
Largest layer 1800 miles
thick
Has hot and dense rock
The rock moves because
of temperature change
The movement causes
the plates to move in the
crust
The mantle can be 1600-
4000 degrees
7. +
Convention Currents
The
mantle flows
because of these
Caused by hot
material rising,
cooling, and sinking
over and over again.
8. +
Outer Core
Like
a ball of hot
metal
Made of melted
nickel and iron
Located1800 miles
beneath the crust
1400 miles thick
9. +
Inner Core
Is so hot and has so much
pressure that it becomes a
solid
Located 4000 miles
beneath the crust
800 miles thick
9000 degrees
3,000,000 times the air
pressure at sea level on
earth
