3. Meaning of percent
• During yours exams , you are always busy
comparing your marks with other children’s
marks or you are even interested to in which
subject your performance is better.
• Suppose , Rajesh got 18 marks out of 25 and
Gopal got 14 out of 20 in Maths, who did better?
• We express the marks as fraction of 1.
• Thus , we get

of Gopal.
• We can , now compare

4. Lets answer some questions

A percent is a ratio whose second term is 100.
The word percent is derived from latin word ‘per
centum’ , which means per hundred. We use
symbol ‘ %’ for percent. Thus,
72 percent= 72% =

To change Decimal into percents
Example- (i) 0.125 = (0.125 × 100) = 12.5%
Rule – To covert a decimal into percent we move
the decimal point two places to the right and
insert % symbol.
