Definitions & Cautionary Note
Reserves: Our use of the term “reserves” in this presentation means SEC proved oil and gas reserves.
Resources: Our use of the term “resources” in this presentation includes quantities of oil and gas not yet classified as SEC proved oil and gas reserves. Resources are consistent with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) 2P + 2C definitions.
Discovered and prospective resources: Our use of the term “discovered and prospective resources” are consistent with SPE 2P + 2C + 2U definitions.
Organic: Our use of the term Organic includes SEC proved oil and gas reserves excluding changes resulting from acquisitions, divestments and year-average pricing impact.
Shales: Our use of the term ‘shales’ refers to tight, shale and coal bed methane oil and gas acreage.
Underlying operating expenses are defined as operating expenses less identified items. A reconciliation can be found in the quarterly results announcement.

  2. Shell has seen great improvement in project delivery performance in last 10 years (delivering credible, affordable and competitive projects). But . . . . we know we need to do more to thrive in the energy transition, deliver a world class investment case, meet societal expectations and deliver our own carbon ambition. We introduced the Project Management Framework Feb 2017 – a new risk-based, outcome focused way of running projects in Shell. The structure, process, procedures are in place and in use. Our Project Management Framework relies on competent people. We recognise that the next step change in performance will be driven through behavioural change.
  3. Putting our finger on the characteristics and behaviours required in successful project leaders is a fundamental part of informing the change required. This project leadership research does just that. We are using the output of the research to shape what we look for in project leaders through our resourcing, people development and internal assessment programme. Learning is one of the 8 survival skills. We (Shell) were very keen to share best practices and learn from others through collaborating with Sarah Coleman, Mike Bourne and 4 other companies across different industries. I particularly like the combination of academic and practitioner input.
