ANALYSIS OF SECOND MAGAZINE

      VIBE MAGAZINE

ABOUT VIBE
•   Vibe Magazine is published by Intermedia Vibe
    Holdings who bought BlackBook in 2012.
•   Based in New York City, US.
•   Predominately features R&B and Hip-Hop.
•   Founded by Quincy Jones in 1993, in
    partnership with Time Inc.
•   Was called Volume before co-founder Scott
    Poulson-Bryant called it Vibe.
•   Circulation of 300,943 in June 2012 whereas
    the total in 2011 was 301,408.
COVER PAGE
                                  MAIN IMAGE
•   The main image on this cover page is
    of 50 cent.
•   It is a medium close up and shows his
    expression which is angry or stern.
    This links with the coverline “WHO‟S
    AFRAID OF 50 CENT?”. The image
    allows you to answer the question.
•   It comes out of the magazine and
    makes you feel intimidated.
•   Clothes directly relate to his genre of
    music of Rap – vest, cap and „bling‟.
COVER PAGE
                                   MASTHEAD
•   Masthead is a consistent font and size
    every edition of the magazine but the
    colour changes. The same can be said
    for the whole cover.
•   Distinct font allows instant recognition
    from audience.
•   Magazine is mainly focused on Rap
    and R&B.
•   The masthead stretches across the
    whole magazine and is behind the
    image.
COVER PAGE
                                     COVERLINES
•   The main cover line on the magazine
    directly relates to the main image. It asks
    the reader if they are afraid of 50 cent and
    then pulls a quote out of the magazine – “I
    DON‟T SEE SENSE IN RESOLVING
    ISSUES WITH ANYBODY.” This again
    reflects the hard background nature of his
    genre Rap.
•   The other coverlines are all about the
    contents of the magazine. Along the top we
    see the main artists that people like the
    most – Beyoncé, Lil Wayne and Shakira.
•   No real house colour style, all different
    colours.
•   Coverlines are Sans Serif.
•    Arranged in a „C‟ pattern which is pleasant
    to the eye of the reader.

•   Main image of contents page
    represents the genre Rap and is shown
    with the cap and bling.
•   Masthead is used in the top right along
    with the issue date – Caption.
•   „V‟ in background is the company logo.
•   Contents is split up into two sections,
    features and fashion.
•   Text wraps around image.

•   All of them contain a „V‟ faded in the background.
•   Contents title is separated into three sections, CO, NTEN and TS.
•   Text usually wraps around image.
•   Double Page Spread –
•   Always contains a main image that takes up whole page and an article on the other.
