2. Masthead
The masthead is the title of the
magazine. I have chosen a bold black
and white title as it is the first thing you
see on my magazine. It's called "Bars"
because music tends to run in bars
and rappers tend to use the word as
'verses' or 'lyrics'
Issue number
The issue number tells the audience how
many issues the magazine has. I decided to
link up the issue and the date line because
they use up less space here. The effect of
that is that there is more of a hot spot in the
centre of the magazine. The issue number
and the date line can cover up the dead
space and make it into something useful,
which is what I have created here.
Pug
The pug is the corner of the magazine which
usually features promotions. I created this
pug in order to make my magazine have
some features. This is interesting for the
reader, and it actually includes a puff which
is a gift for the reader. The effect of that is
that the reader is more likely to be attracted
to the magazine if a puff is included. Again, I
used a buzz word and emphasised it by
making the stroke thicker to make sure the
audience sees the feature and is likely to
read it.
Strapline
The strapline shows all the themes and what is featured inside the magazine, I decided to put in this sentence as the word "beginner" can be for
anyone. Also the word reflects the issue number of the magazine as well. This should attract the audience as it makes them look for things to
learn. Another word which is "Free" is a buzz word that attracts the attention of the reader immediately so by adding it here, it makes the reader
want to open my magazine.
Coverline
The coverline is the stories inside the
magazine. For each coverline I changed the
font because it looked uninteresting when
they were all using the same typography.
The effect of that is that the magazine looks
lively and attracts the younger audience. I
varied the colours to show the mood of each
story as well as making the magazine look
more colourful.
Main coverline
The main coverline is the biggest story on
the magazine. I decided to put the main
coverline at the bottom so there would be
more space for the other cover lines. I also
did it as this looks bold and not many
magazines have their main coverline at the
bottom. I added a inner glow and a drop
shadow to create a bright effect to attract the
reader. Also I added a stroke in a bright
colour as well to show the luminosity and the
importance of the main coverline.
Strip
The strip is the header describing what is
featured in the magazine. I decided to make
my sentence short and sweet almost like a
slogan to be catchy. The word "You" appeals
to the reader as it singles the audience out
by giving a personal effect, making the
reader look targeted.
3. Coverline
The coverline is an additional story inside the
magazine. It is not as important as the main
story. To make that obvious I did not edit the
style of the text so much because this story
was not the main coverline. I made the artists
name a bit bolder than the rest of the text to
show the importance of the artist and it relates
to the genre of the magazine.
Main coverline
The main coverline is the main story. I made
the artists name bolder than the rest of the
sentence and much brighter because that is
who is on the front cover as the main image. I
made the S's to be dollar signs as this looks
like the genre of rap/hip hop
Content
The content is each page and what is
featured inside the magazine. I made the
text white as it shows up better on the
background and because white connotes
a feeling of alertness. The effect of that is
the reader will be attracted to it because
it has bright colours. I made the artists
names bold because it attracts the
readers attention of who they could
admire. The pages are not in order
because in some magazines they do not
put them in order so I was influenced by
that.
Branding
Branding is showing the brand where it came from. The effect of adding the
name of the magazine on the contents page, allows the reader to remember
what they are reading and what this page is from. This anchors the pages
together as they have an icon in common.
Subscription
The subscription is where the reader can follow
up on updates by the company. I created a
separate box for this feature because I want the
audience to recognise that my magazine can use
even social media to show hip hop
Main image
The main image is the largest picture on the
page.
I made sure that the subject was the same on
the front cover as well as the contents
because it makes it clear who I am writing
about/focusing on. To make the image
interesting, I included a filter on the
photograph to make it look more attractive. I
also included a border around the image to
make it separate from the other features. This
makes the image stand out and makes it easy
for the reader to locate. I positioned the image
as close as I could to the main coverline to
make sure that they relate to each other and
would not confuse the reader.
Masthead
The masthead is the title of the page. I
decided to create a bold and obvious
masthead for the contents because it links with
the in house style of my magazine on the front
cover. I added an outer glow and a white drop
shadow to make the title vibrant and to be the
first thing seen on the page.
